He had gone to the timber in company with Mr. McMollum to fell a tree, which striking another tree caused it to spring backward, catching him under it With Mr. McCollum's assistance he extricated himself. Help soon came and he was taken to the house. Dr. Railey was summoned and on an examination found his body badly crushed that medical aid was of no avail, and at half past 3 o'clock p.m. death came his relief. The body was taken to the residence of his grandfather, Mr. Holding, on Friday, where the funeral services were held Saturday at 10 o'clock, conducted by Rev. Showalter, who delivered a very impressive discourse. His text was taken from Psalm LXXXX:IX and CIII:XV-XVI, after which the remains were laid to rest in the Oakwood cemetery. William was born in Valley Falls, Jefferson county, Kansas, 1867. His honesty and determination to succeed had gained for him the universal admiration of all who knew him. Samuel Hedges, 44, resided in Boone, Bates, Missouri in the 1870 census with Aletha, 21. John is recorded as age 20; Charles, 17; Annie, 15; Albert, 12; William, 3; & Mary, 1.
