Guthrie, Civil War Veteran residing at 1820 Avenue D, died at his home at 12:30 p.m. today. He had been in poor health for some time. Mr. Guthrie celebrated his ninetieth birthday on 2 June having been born on that day in 1839 in Greenburg, PA. In 1856 he came with his parents to IA coming by way of the Ohio River, thence up the Mississippi River to Keokuk and then overland to Delaware County where they made their home at Hartwick. In the early days he carried the mail, riding horseback from Hartwick to Garnavillo. He enlisted in August 1861 in Company L, First Iowa Cavalry and served with the armies in the west for three years in the Civil War. In 1869 he was married to Sarah Jane Orr of near Buck Creek. They settled on a farm near Ryan and soon after moved to KS where Mr. Guthrie took up a homestead. After three years' residence there they returned to near Ryan and resided there twenty-five years and later engaged in the mercantile business in Ryan for twelve years. In 1901 they moved to Cedar Rapids. His wife preceded him in death on 1 April 1924. He is survived by four children: T. A., W. L., and Miss Luella Guthrie, all of Cedar Rapids; Mrs. Homer Chapman, of Kalamazoo, MI, seven grandchildren and a brother, S. O. Guthrie of Wichita, KS. A son, Arthur M. died in 1912.
