William SPEROW was born near Martinsburg, Berkeley County, West Virginia, on June 22, 1814, the fourth son of George and Sarah (Varner) Sperow, who settled in that county in April 1807. William Sperow was a captain of the militia for five years, elected in 1840 and serving two terms as magistrate, elected in 1861 and again in 1872. His grandfather (no name given) was born on the Rhine, Germany, and moved to the states at the time of the French and Indian war, settling near Lancaster, Pennsylvania. He raised a family of nine children and died there. On August 13, 1835, in Berkeley County, William Sperow married Rebecca Duble, born in Washington County, Maryland, on July 12, 1812, to Jacob and Susan (Avy) Duble. Miss Duble's maternal grandfather, Henry Avy, was one of the early settlers of Maryland. The couple had seven children: Susan Sperow, May 4, 1837-?, married to Dennis Baker; Virginia Sperow, May 13, 1841-before 1884; Benjamin F. Sperow, April 3, 1844-?, married to Elizabeth Friend; John E. Sperow, November 22, 1846-?, married to Susan E. Emmert; William O.B. Sperow, September 6, 1849-?, married to Julia A. Buxton; Mary M.D. Sperow, March 28, 1852-?, married to Jacob S. Eakle, lived in Washington County, Maryland; and an infant, born October 1839 and deceased (no name given). William Sperow was a farmer in Berkeley County, as were his immediate ancestors since settling there in 1807. His post office address was Falling Waters, Berkeley County, West Virginia.
