I don't think I ever heard his wife's name, if so I can't remember. Great Grandfather "Bill" didn't believe in slavery it was said and left in the night abandoning his farm, livestock etc. and in fact in the process of fleeing he changed his name to Taylor, (his mother's maiden name). It is not known defiantly what his true name was but he hinted it could have been Hill. I don't know where he went directly from W.Virginia, but eventually he came to Minnesota and lived with Grandpa John and Grandma Elizabeth. Their farm was in Meeker County, near the town of Dassel, County seat being Litchfield. I don't know how long they lived there, but all of John's family were born there except Ansel and Florence who were born in Bristol, after the trek West. In the late 1870's Grandpa John sold his farm livestock etc., loaded his family including his Dad William and along with several other families. Taylors, Wrights, Boices are among names I remember. They boarded an immigrant train in Minn. And after several days they arrived at the end of the railroad which at the time was "Shoshone Junction", Wyoming. They stayed there long enough to purchase horses, mules, wagons, provisions and supplies for the trip Westward by wagon and on foot. The group traveling together lived off the land when they could. The men were hunters of course and good with a gun. They saw a few deer and shot an antelope or two as I recall, also some sage hens. They arrived in Boise Idaho in late fall and bad weather forced them to spend the winter in that vicinity. The story goes that Grandma Elizabeth tried to persuade the group to settle there, but John decided against it and they pushed on. Land was for free, good land for homesteading purposes. They traveled on. I don't remember any of the events between Boise and White Bluffs, Wash. At White Bluffs, some Indians had a ferry to cross the Columbia River for a price of course. The group parted with the last of their money which they had pooled for ferrying the river. Reaching the other side of the river they camped for a time to rest. They had no food and were contemplating killing a horse to eat when some cowboys riding by and seeing their plight took pity on them and took them to where they could shoot a steer, which they did and the feast was on for a few days. They journeyed on to Kittitas Valley, camped by a creek near where Ellensburg is now. John and another man or two got a job on a horse powered hay bailer. The first 50 cents he made he bought corn meal so they could have corn pone, which he was very fond of. Grandma Elizabeth told me that while they were camped in this spot a man on a horse rode up and asked for some food. She baked him a corn pone on the campfire. The man gave her 50 cents for it. She in turn bought a whole slab of bacon for the 50 cents. Think of that now. Grandpa John had dreams of going all the way to the coast, but he eventually traded his team and wagon for the Bristol farm. There was a log house and shed barn. Great Grandpa Bill's health had deteriorated. Evidently he must have had rheumatism or arthritis or some type of crippling disease. He got so he couldn't walk, so was more of a burden than help. He must have been quite a story teller though. I still remember some of the tales my Dad told me that were told to him by his Grandpa Bill. Getting back to Bristol, Grandpa John found there was a saw mill near Thorp (water-powered). He made a deal with the owner. I don't remember all the details, but he needed money, a team of horses, lumber, a wagon and some farm machinery. All of which he got eventually. He traded labor for lumber to build a house. He later logged and drove the Yakima River from Bristol to Thorp. He logged for a mill which was located near the mouth of the Teanaway River. Got lumber from this mill to build the Bristol barn, hog house, chicken house, and Jim house. I've forgotten the man's name who built the Jim house which was built for G.G. William's domain. It was built near the main house so he could be looked after more readily. My Dad Ansel being the youngest boy was delegated to keep the old man company and look after his needs and listen to his stories. I don't think the boy (probably between 6-8 years) was too enchanted with the chore by the still had some fond memories later and repeated some of the stories occasionally and did as he was told at the time of course. A story that was heard many times was how G.G. Bill decided he'd teach the Taylor Bros, his grandsons, how to smoke a pipe. They were growing boys and he smoked a very strong tobacco. It made them all sick as dogs for an entire day or more, so the upshot was none of them ever smoked again. The early information on the Taylors is not all accurate. They lived in Russel County which later became Wise County, Virginia, which is in western Virginia, not West Virginia. William Taylor was born in NC. Children born in 1832, 1834, 1836 and 1838 were born in NC and the ones born 1840 and later were born in VA, all census records list William and Dicy as being born in NC. They did not change the family last name G.G. Bill must have been telling a tall story, as they are listed with the last name Taylor in the 1850 and 1860 Census records in VA before the Civil War. We now know Hill was his wife's maiden name.
