Van Bloom Died Last Friday, May 18 Services Held Monday Afternoon Residents of Dayton were sad last weekend because of the death of their kind Mayor William Van Bloom, to whom death came on Friday, May 18 after a long illness, which he tried so hard to overcome. Not much outward show of sympathy was apparent, but almost every citizen had visited with Van during the last few trips he made down town, and he was aware of their true feelings in his behalf. The people knew that he understood. The Mayor was serving his second term in office. He had tried his best to serve the people of Dayton in the best way possible, regardless of criticism which might come his way. Residents felt a sense of trust in Mayor Bloom, and those who worked under him in the city government. Mr. Verle Beckman, Councilman, has been appointed as Acting Mayor during Van's illness and may continue in that capacity for the time being. Van Bloom was born and raised within a short distance of Dayton, and spent his life here. Small wonder then, that he was always interested in this community, and the things which would be beneficial to it. Van was very interested in the finishiing of the Dayton Stadium, and in conversation with the writer, he voiced an eagerness for sporting activities to start in the Stadium. He said, "I hope I can watch some good wrestling matches there." Funeral services were held last Monday, May 21 in the Lutheran church. Rev. R. E. Carlson spoke. Carson were in charge of arrangements. Interment was in Dayton Cemetery. Mrs. Ivan Skoglund and Mrs. E. O. Lindberg cared for the flowers. Casketbearers were all very good friends and associates of the Mayor, Ralph Bowman, Ralph Strand, Olger Strand, Edon Wrede, Wilmer Forsberg and Leff Holmstrom. Some of the relatives and friends from a distance attending the service were Mr. and Mrs. Victor Payn, Mr. and Mrs. Dewey Payn, Mr. and Mrs. John Lidvall, all of Cedar Rapids; Mrs. Dick Raney, Chicago; Mr. and Mrs. J. Gabrielson, Des Moines; Mrs. Albert Halden, Ames; Mr. and Mrs. Charles Miller, Alta; Mrs. Edna Gabrielson and Mrs. Dean Simonson of Quimby; Clyde Shold, and Carl Shold, Albert Lea, Minn.; Mr. Rush Gabrielson, Crystal Lake; Mrs. Dorothy Drugg, Buffalo Center; Mrs. R. W. Wilkinson and Mr. Corbin, Nevada; Mr. and Mrs. Gerald Chapman, Fort Dodge; Mr. and Mrs. Ed Lidvall, Boone; Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Decatur, Grinnell; Mr. and Mrs. W. D. Miller, Grundy Center; Mr. Jack Nelson, Mrs. Frances Thompson, Boone; Mrs. Albert Morhouse, Humboldt; and Mr. and Mrs. Will Reed and Mr. and Mrs. Sam Reed, of Garner, Iowa, and many more. Obituary WM. VAN BLOOM Wm Van Bloom, son of Eric Bloom and Alice Dowd, was born in Dayton Township, November 21, 1887. He spent his boyhood on his father's farm and completed his elementary education in the district school. Later he spent some winters at Tobin College in Fort Dodge. On June 22, 1916, he was united in marriage with Amy May Gabrielson. After that he farmed in the neighborhood of Dayton until his retirement in 1944. During these years he also operated threshing outfits and for many years had been a local seed corn dealer. Van was always interested in the community and everything connected with Dayton Township where he had spent his entire life. He held offices in the Farm Bureau many years, was township Assessor and later Town Assessor. He served on the Town Council and at the time of his death was serving his second term as the Mayor of Dayton. Van was a member of the Emanuel Lutheran Church. He held membership in the Izaak Walton League and Oak Lodge No. 531 A. F. and A. M. For many years Van had not been in good health and had many consultations at the clinic in Rochester, Minn., where he submitted to surgery last fall. But the improvement was not permanent and after being bedfast for many weeks, he passed away at his home on last Friday, May 18 at the age of 68 years, 5 months and 27 days. He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters Maude and Violet. He leaves to mourn his passing, his wife, Amy, his sister, Dorothy, his nephews and nieces, and many other relatives and friends.
