William Volney Spalding was the son of Wm. C. and Charity J. Spalding. He was born in Cole County, Mo., April 12, 1856. He was united in marriage to Emma J. Gilleland, January 1, 1882. Three children were born. The only daughter, Nancy Effie, passed away August 16, 1895, near seven years of age. Mr. Spalding is survived by his faithful, loving companion and two sons, Arvil L. Spalding of Granite City, Ill., and Lansford M. Spalding of Astoria, Ore. He leaves one granddaughter, Jane Elizabeth Spalding, and one grandson, William Volney Spalding; one brother, Elijzh Clay of the state of Louisiana; two sisters, Mrs. Lucetta Pitchford of Oklahoma City, Okla., and Mrs. Emma Russell of Olean, Mo.; several nieces and nephews and other loved relatives and friends. When 16 years of age he became a member of the Christian Church at Spring Garden, later transferring his membership to Olean Church. He was a sincere churchman, serving many years as officer in the Christian Church.
