Ward was born in West Moreland Co., Penn., Dec. 31, 1830, and died at his home near Bentonsport, Iowa, May 15, 1917 at 2:30 a.m. having suffered a stroke of apoplexy the evening before, from which he never regained consciousness. Mr. Ward was one of a family of thirteen children, six brothers and seven sisters; two brothers and four sisters having preceded him in death. On March 4th, 1852, he was united in marriage to Susannah Aurelia Leighty in Penn., and came to Iowa two years later, locating at Bentonsport where he had employment in the mill with James A.... Mr. Ward was one of a family of thirteen children, six brothers and seven sisters; two brothers and four sisters having preceded him in death. On March 4th, 1852, he was united in marriage to Susannah Aurelia Leighty in Penn., and came to Iowa two years later, locating at Bentonsport where he had employment in the mill with James A. Brown. After a few years this worthy couple moved to the farm where they raised their family, and which has been his home until his death, the wife preceding him some seventeen years. To this union eleven children were born, five of whom were called home while still young. The six remaining to mourn their loss and who were all present at the funeral are; Mrs. Sallie Moore of Centerville, Iowa; Mrs. Allie McCracken of near Bentonsport, Iowa; Mrs. Myrta Burns of Keosauqua, Iowa; Miss Lue, Albert and Dal at home. Six grandchildren and three great grandchildren also remain. Mr. Ward was a member of the Presbyterian Church having joined when a young man. For fifty years he has been a member of the Masonic Lodge, holding his membership in the Bentonsport lodge for several years and then transferring it to Bonaparte. It can truly be said he was interested in his home, seldom leaving it only on business and of later years never at all. Having celebrated his eighty-sixth birthday last Dec. and enjoying fairly good health when he was stricken so suddenly while seated at the supper table, it came as a great shock to his family and they deeply feel their loss. Of his immediate family, the brother living in Iowa, D.W. Ward of Eddyville and daughter, Mrs. Theodore Ott, were present at the funeral, which was held from the late home Wednesday afternoon, the Presbyterian minister of Bonaparte, Rev. D. Mason, having charge of the services. The Masonic order conducted the services at the grave, the body being laid to rest in the Bentonsport Cemetery by the side of his wife. Relatives present at the funeral those mentioned above were Leo and Harley Moore of Centerville, Iowa; P.R. and Isaac Wilson and Mrs. Nancy Gapen of Danville, Iowa."
