Watchorn in Rosamond Memorial, Friday morning, June 25th, as a result of injuries sustained the previous afternoon when he fell from a roof on which he was working at the plant of the Producers Dairy. Mr Watchorn was one of Almonte's best known citizens having served the town in a number of public capacities since he moved here following his marriage in 1913. At the time of the accident which proved fatal, he was employed with Mr Harry Sadler and other workman on construction of an addition to the dairy. Mr Watchorn was on the roof at the time throwing off planks that had been part of a water tank. A spike in one of these heavy boards caught in the back of his shirt as he threw it over the edge of the roof it carried him with it to the ground, a distance of 15 feet. It is thought he landed on his shoulder and struck his head causing a skull fracture. He was unconscious when picked up but regained consciousness for a short time before being removed to the hospital in an ambulance. Born Near Clayton Wm W. Watchorn was born on the family farm near Clayton on Dec 18th, 1878. After receiving a public school education in the village he farmed until 1912 after which he spent a season with the county good road gang which was then busy constructing the large network of improved highways that now covers Lanark County. In 1913 Mr Watchorn married the former Lila Turner, who predeceased him eight months ago. The couple moved into Almonte in that year and was engaged in getting out frame timber of shipment to the Old Country and in carpenter work. In 1917 he was engaged as police chief and town foreman for the town of Almonte and after serving in those capacities for some years resigned to go into the retail lumber business. Later in association with his son-in-law Mr George Gomme, he established a planing mill which they operated together for some time and which he continued to carry on himself after the partnership was dissolved a few years ago. Enters Council In 1930 Mr Watchorn sought public office for the first time and was elected to the Town Council. After two years in this post he was elevated to the reeveship which he held for four years. In 1937 he became Mayor and continued in that office until the fall of 1942 when he retired. Surviving are one daughter, Mrs George E. Gomme, (Rosedith) and a grandson Billy Gomme; six sisters, Mrs Robert Munro, Hall's Mills; Mrs Wm G. Finlayson of Wimmer, Sask; Mrs L.H. Buffan, Carleton Place; Mrs J.C. Wright, Brantford; Mrs M.P. Taylor, Trenton and Miss Minerva Watchorn of Perth. A brother R.H. Watchorn of Pembroke, died in 1934. The late Mr Watcorn was an Anglican in religion; a staunch Conservative in politics and a member of Mississippi Lodge A.F. and A.M. and of L.O.L., 378 Almonte. He was fond of outdoor sports and always enjoyed hockey in the old days. He was an ardent curler and a member of the local club. Through his efforts it was made possible for young people to enjoy skating in the town during the last two winter seasons. He urged that the rink be reopened after it was closed for a time and he supervised its operations himself. No more affable and kind hearted man lived in this part of Lanark County than the deceased. He was popular with his colleagues on the County Council while serving as Reeve and the same could be said of him in the Town Council. He had a fund of witty stories about his boyhood days in Clayton, was thoroughly conversant with the history of this part of the country and was a welcome speaker at dinners and other public functions. Many Attend Funeral The funeral which was held Sunday afternoon at 3 o'clock from the home of his son-in-law, Mr George Gomme, to St Paul's Anglican Church, was attended by many friends and relatives from the district. There was a profusion of floral tributes among which were pieces from the L.O.L. No 378; Baptist Y.P.S.; Officers of Mississippi Lodge; Producers Dairy; Employees of Code's Knitting Mill, Perth; Hotel Almonte and Dominion Stores. Rev J.C. Anderson of Ottawa, a former rector of St Paul's Anglican Church, Almonte, conducted the funeral service assisted by Rev Robert Shannon the present incumbent. Interment was in the Auld Kirk Cemetery. Mississippi Lodge A.F. and A.M. Almonte, had charge of the service. The pallbearers were: Geo H. Doucett, M.L.A., R.A. Jamieson, John Miller, Louis Peterson, John Joss and Thos Barclay.
