On the afternoon of the day mentioned,two children of Wm. Dolph, living west of Cherokee, a boy aged about 6 years and a girl aged 10, while out in the fields got hold of a wild parsnip and took it to the house. They showed their mother what they had and asked if they could eat it. Mrs. Dolph examined it and supposing itto be an artichoke, told the children they might eat it. They did so, and in a very few hours they were both dead. Shortly after eating the poisonous root the little boy went out to play with a neighbor's child and while out in the field was taken with spasms. His companion ran to the house and told how he was acting, and as quick as possible he was carried in. His parents did not know what was the trouble,but supposed the child had eaten too heartily of some Dutch cheese. Mr. Dolph started to town for medical aid, but before he returned home the boy was dead. In the meantime the girl had been sent to a neighbor's house, a distance of about two miles, on an errand. When she had been gone about two hours it was feared that all was not right, and it was soon found that she had not reached the neighbor's. After two hours of searching she was found in a slough or piece of bottom land about halfway between the two houses, in an unconscious state and beyond human aid. She had been taken with spasms on the road,and had wandered into this slough, wherewith no earthly power to help her and no eye save one to see, she had struggled, suffered and died in terrible torture. Around where she was found the grass and ground were torn up; her hair was torn from her head, and her face was covered with mud and dirt, showing better than words can tell the hideous horribleness of her death. She was carried home and Dr.Cleaves did what he could for her, but as she was pulseless when found his services could be of little avail. It was only about four hours from the time they had eaten of the parsnips until they were dead. The two children were buried on Saturday.The grief of the parents over the terrible affair was heart-rending in the extreme.
