Hornaday, son of Mr. and Mrs. C.W. Hornaday of Sidney, at the home of the bride's parents, Wednesday, June 6. Rev. A.K. Williams read the service at four o'clock in the afternoon, in the presence of relatives and close friends. Mrs. H.W. Ells of Sidney, sister of the groom, played the Lohengrin wedding march for the processional, as the party took its place before a background of ferns and gambler roses. Preceding the ceremony, Miss Helen Mae Woodward sang "Ah, Sweet Mystery of Life," and "Oh Promise Me," accompanied on the violin by Mrs. G. H. Segrist, and on the piano by Mrs. Ells. Kathryn Ann Ells and Norma Lee Woodward were flower girls, and were dressed in pink and orchid organdia (sic). The bride, who was given in marriage by her father, was dressed in a floor-length white eyelet embroidered organdie, closely fitted with a wide flare at the bottom. The short puff sleeves were covered with rows of tiny ruffles. She wore a finger-tip length veil which was held in place by orange blossoms. Her flowers were gardenias. An informal reception at the home, followed the service. The Misses Eva Jeffries, Juliet Atwood and Helen Mae Woodward had charge of the serving. Miss Wilma Jeffries had charge of the guest book, and Mrs. G.H. Segrist had charge of the gifts. The bride's traveling outfit was of navy blue, with white accessories. The bride has been a teacher in the Oxford high school for the past four years. The groom is employed in Lincoln. Both attended Nebraska Wesleyan. The couple left immediatley (sic) for their home in Lincoln. Out-of-town guests were Mr. and Mrs. C.W. Hornaday and Mrs. H.W. Ells and daughter of Sidney. ========================== The Des Moines Register (Des Moines, IA), January 7, 2009; pg. 6 WILMA H0RNADAY ROGERS Formerly of Des Moines Wilma Hornaday Rogers, formerly of Des Moines, IA, passed away January 2, 2009, in Lincoln, NE. She was born in 1910, the fourth of seven children of James and Millie Woodward of Chester, NE. All the Woodward children worked in the family store. In high school, Wilma excelled in basketball and track. After attending Nebraska Wesleyan College, Wilma taught school in Dry Creek and Oxford Nebraska. She married Robert Hornaday in 1934 and moved to Des Moines, IA in 1936. There, she raised her three children and taught at the American Institute of Business. On the death of her first husband in 1975, she retired and traveled extensively with her second husband, Gilbert Rogers. She moved to Lincoln in 2003 after his death. Wilma lived a life of service to others. She was an active member of Westminster Presbyterian Church in Des Moines, IA for over 60 years. She served as Worthy Matron of Waveland Eastern Star and president of her PEO chapter. For recreation; she was an avid bridge player. She is survived by son and daughter-in-law, Robert and Joanne Hornaday of Charlotte, NC, son, James Hornaday of Homer, AK; daughter, Susan Norris of Lincoln, NE; sister, Doris Segrist of Orange, CA, sister and brother-in-law, Norma and Keith Haist of Lincoln, NE, and sister-in-law Connie Woodward, Los Gatos, CA. Wilma was blessed with nine grandchildren and 19 greatgrandchildren. She cared for her family and of course ended up caring for the numerous dogs, cats and other creatures her children brought home. Wilma experienced the American life - starting in horse-drawn wagons through depression and wars. From President Taft through George W. Bush. From bloomers to computers, Den Mother to great grandmother. She did it all and did it well. Memorial Service at a later date with a private family internment in Chester, NE. Butherus, Maser and Love Funeral Home will be handling the arrangements.
