She was a pioneer of the beauty and color analysis industry, a celebrated author, and a popular lecturer. More importantly, she was a devoted wife and mother, a loving grandmother, and a faithful follower of Jesus Christ. Bernice was born on May 23, 1929, in Cheyenne, Wyoming, the daughter of Roberta Belle Allbee and William Bristol Tufford. She graduated from high school and cosmetology school in Cheyenne, Wyoming, then married the love of her life, Dean Kentner, on May 9, 1948. They soon moved to North Platte, Nebraska, where Dean worked for the Union Pacific Railroad, and Bernice cut and colored hair to provide extra income for their family of four daughters and one son. In the late 1960’s Bernice began to learn about seasonal color analysis, a concept that divided people into one of four color groups based upon their complexion, hair and eye color, and other factors. Bernice wanted to learn more, but there was no real research on the subject and very few training materials. Bernice then began a life-long journey to research, understand, and teach color analysis to beauty professionals and individuals. After many years of research, Bernice published the first comprehensive book on seasonal color analysis, “Color Me A Season”, in 1979, and founded the Color Me A Season company to provide training and cosmetics for seasonal color analysts. She developed training materials, a cosmetics line, and would go on to write many more books on the subject, which remain influential to this day. In 1956 Dean and Bernice joined The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and remained active and faithful members their whole lives. The family moved to California in 1976, settling first in Concord, then Antioch. After the passing of her husband, Dean, she moved to North Ogden, UT, where she lived with her daughter. Bernice was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Dean; her sister Lorraine and brother Donald. She is survived by her five children: Cynthia (Steve) Krause, Logan, UT; Jim (Debbie) Kentner, Concord, CA; Denice (Richard) Baldree, Ogden, UT; Nora (Scott) Jackman, North Ogden, UT; Claudean (Kary) Burke, North Ogden, UT. She is also survived by 24 grandchildren and 48 great-grandchildren. Above all, Bernice’s legacy was one of faith and family. She was greatly loved and will be dearly missed. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, January 6, 2018 at the LDS Church at 575 East 3100 North, North Ogden, UT. Following the service Bernice will be buried at Oakmont Memorial Park in Lafayette, CA at a later date. Arrangements entrusted to Myers Mortuary of Ogden.
