Mrs. Motley was born Aug. 22, 1912, on the family farm in Pittsylvania County near Chatham, Va. She was a graduate of Farmville State Teachers College (now Longwood College) in Farmville, Va., where she majored in elementary education. Motley PORTSMOUTH Woodruth Towler Motley, 92, went home to be with her Lord Aug. 9, 2005. She was the daughter of the late Woodruth Nuckols Towler and Samuel Joseph Towler. Mrs. Motley was born Aug. 22, 1912, on the family farm in Pittsylvania County near Chatham, Va. She was a graduate of Farmville State Teachers College (now Longwood College) in Farmville, Va., where she majored in elementary education. Mrs. Motley taught in the Portsmouth School System for a short time after coming to Portsmouth as a bride in 1937 and served as a Welcome Wagon hostess to the community of Portsmouth for 30 years. Mrs. Motley was cherished by her family including her husband of 60 years, the late Langhorne D. Motley and daughter, Woodruth Motley Morgan and her husband Thomas J. Morgan; grandchildren, Dr. T. J. Morgan Jr. and wife Tammy and Langhorne A. Morgan; and great-grandchildren, Elizabeth "Elle" Morgan, namesake Woodruth "Tory" Morgan and Thomas Jackson Morgan III "Jackson" and devoted nieces and nephews. She is also survived by two brothers, James W. Towler and E. Reid Towler and a beloved brother-in-law, William Robert Motley Jr. She was preceded in death by brothers, Byron, Moir and Parker Towler; and sisters, Blanford Anderson and Floreine Gilbert. Mrs. Motley was a member of Broad Street United Methodist Church, Portsmouth, where she had served faithfully for more than 60 years. Her life was centered on her faith, family and friends. She leaves a legacy of love and inspiration to all who knew her -- a Renaissance woman embodying the virtues described in Proverbs 31:10-26 of a Virtuous Woman. Services will be held at Broad Street United Methodist Church Saturday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Harry B. Spear officiating. The interment will follow in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends at Snellings Funeral Home, Churchland Chapel, today from 7:30 to 9 p.m. and also at her daughter's home. Mr. Motley was born in Portsmouth. He was a retired chief planner and estimator for Shop (NU)31, the Inside Machine Shop, and later promoted to general foreman for Shop (NU)31 at Norfolk Naval Shipyard. He was an active member of Broad Street United Methodist Church. Survivors include his wife, Woodruth Towler Motley; daughter, Woodruth ''Woodie'' Morgan and her husband, Thomas ''Tommy'' Jackson Morgan of Virginia Beach; a sister, Frances Motley Cross of Midlothian, Va.; two brothers, William Robert Motley Jr., Ryland Clay Motley, both of Portsmouth; grandsons, Dr. Thomas Jackson ''T.J.'' Morgan Jr. and his wife, Tracy Hofmann Morgan, and Langhorne Andrew ''Andy'' Morgan of Virginia Beach; and two great-granddaughters, Elle and Tory Morgan. He was a beloved husband, father and grandfather. A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday by the Rev. Kathryn L. Pigg in Broad Street United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens.
