Wright, Call Number: R929.2 H741 Times Republican, Marshalltown, Iowa, Friday, August 11, 1905 Yates Hollingsworth Dead Old Resident of the County Passes Away at the Age of 82 Yates Holilngsworth, for forty-two years a resident of the county and city died Thursday evening at 5:50 o'clock at the home of his daughter, Mrs. J. G. Sartorius, 512 North Third Avenue, after four weeks illness due to his advanced years. Mr. Hollingsworth came from the sturdy Ohio Quaker stock, and was the youngest son of a family of twelve children, all of whom passed the allotted time of man. Mr. Hollingsworth was born in Miami County, Ohio June 12, 1823. He spent his boyhood and young manhood in his native state, and on March 19, 1846 was married to Nancy Mote, who survives him. Five years after his marriage Mr. Hollingsworth moved to New London, Clinton County, Indiana, where he took up his profession, that of a teacher. As a "Hoosier Schoolmaster" he presided over twenty-eight terms of school in Indiana, and after coming west taught in both Tama and Marshall counties for a few years. Mr. Hollingsworth is a plain, outspoken man, who stood for higher principles as he viewed them. While he had no religion, as religion is considered, he was a christian, belonging to the sect known as Soulsleepers, or Restitutionists, a branch of the Church of God. Mr. Hollingsworth was always interested in politics, even in late years. In his younger life he was a staunch republican, and supported the straight republican ticket until after the war, Lincoln being the last republican he voted for. Mr. Hollingsworth then became a democrat, and ardently supported Horace Greeley in his losing campaign. For the past twenty years or more he has been a populist and he liked nothing better than to talk politics. In an early day he was a stump speaker of more than ordinary ability. He also wrote extensively along the lines of politics and religion, and at one time came into state prominence on account of an answer to an open letter of Robert G. Ingersoll. Mr. Hollingsworth was the father of ten children, nine of whom are living. He also leaves twenty-eight grandchildren and twelve great grandchildren. His children are Mrs. Charity Sartorius, Elijah Hollingsworth, Mrs. Rachel Phay of his city; William Hollingsworth of Peru; Milton Hollingsworth of Halfway, Oregon; J. C. Hollingsworth, city; Mrs. Jennie Pettygrew of Valentine, Nebraska; Mrs. Ella Phay of Pendleton, Oregon, and Mrs. Ida Diller of this city. Two sisters, Mrs. Leodicea McCoy, of Kokomo, Indiana aged 88, and Mrs. Annie Millner, or Middlefork, Indiana, aged 80 survive the deceased. The funeral will be held at the residence Sunday afternoon at 1 o'clock, Eldred G. Marsh, officiating. The interment will be in Riverside I visited the cemetery and unfortunately there are no headstones, but there are cemetery records.
