He was married to Sarah Emmerella St. Clair, Oct. 26, 1971, at Morgantown, West Va. To this union were born 12 children, viz: M.H. Davis, Mrs. Cora Chancy, W.E. Davis, Z.F. Davis and Linnie Davis, all of Delphos; J.E. Davis of Miami, Fla.; W.R. Davis, Miltonvale; Mrs. Stella Prosser, Topeka; and Mrs. Nellie Anderson, Star City, West Va. The wife and three children, Effie Hardesty, Eddie Davis and Linzy (twin of Linnie), preceded Mr. Davis in death. Besides the nine children, the deceased is survived by two brothers, E.N. Davis, of Delphos; and E.E. Davis, of Denver, Colorado; twenty-two grand children, and four great grand-children. In March, 1973, Mr. and Mrs. Davis started to Kansas with their eldest son, Herbert, then a baby. They made the journey by train, but had to cross the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers on a ferry. They arrived in Solomon March 28, that town having the closest railroad to Delphos, and drove to hour miles northeast of Delphos, where other relatives then lived. Later, they homesteaded in Bethel community, where they lived until about 18 years ago, when they moved to Delphos, having lived in this vicinity for 59 years. Mr. Davis united with the Methodist church at the age of 15 years and remained in that faith until the end. The deceased was a carpenter by trade, having worked at the business since a boy, and he and his brothers have been the carpenters who have erected, or in some way worked at, most of the private buildings, public halls, schools and churches, over a large area of territory in this and surrounding towns. Mr. Davis was a fatherly, dignified man, who commanded the sincerest respect of his family and of all with whom he was associated. He was meek and gentle in his ways, and bore the crosses that came into his life with great Christian fortitude. Funeral services were held at the M.E. Church at 2 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 25, with the pastor, Rev. E.J. Vaughan, in charge. The pallbearers were B.M. Parks, A.J. Scranton, I.N. Richardson, B.V. Parks, W.S. Richards, and S. Belveal.
