Whereas his brothers, James and Samuel, joined in the fight from the onset and marched off to Shiloh, Zilman turned a deaf ear to those clamoring for war and opted to stay behind. But, his determination to stay out of the fray would eventually come to an end. As the years wore on and the tides of war began to turn squarely against the south, he would eventually be forced into service. When the 10th Arkansas surrendered with the garrison on July 9, 1863, following the siege of Port Hudson, the badly beaten men of the 10th were exchanged and told to go home. The soldiers were mostly from the north-central Arkansas counties of White, Van Buren, and Conway. Zilman's brother, James Bradford, was now dead and Samuel was likely one among the beleaguered troops to return home. The Union effort to take control of Arkansas was by this time gaining considerable steam. In preparation for of the Little Rock Campaign, Union forces began flocking into the recently captured river-port town of Helena, Arkansas. Federal troops began their advance against the capital in early August and took full control of the city on September 10, 1863. Little Rock was now the fourth Confederate capital under Union control. The net effect of this was that Arkansas was now a divided state with confederate administration being restricted to the southernmost half of the state. Following a brief furlough, the willing and able-bodied men of the 10th were reorganized into a mounted regiment and placed under the command of Colonel Rufus A Witt. Known as Witt's Cavalry, the unit was essentially a guerrilla force that operated almost entirely behind enemy lines. Consisting of about 200 men, most of which were new conscripts (most of whom were forced to serve at the point of a gun), the cavalrymen fought their first skirmish with Union troops on January 22, 1864, in Searcy County near the small town of Tomahawk, Arkansas. They would fight their last battle near Lewisburg, Arkansas, on February 12, 1865, where they were soundly defeated by federal forces. On May 28, 1865, Colonel Witt requested and received terms under which the men would surrender. While there are scant few official records or names of the men who served in Witt's Cavary, in now seems clear that Zilman Bradford was among the new conscripts. He served in Company C which was under the command of Captain Thomas J Morrison. Morrison kept a diary wherein he recorded the names of his men. Zilman's name appears on page 33 of Morrison's diary which is now in the possession of his grandson, Jeff Bratton. Thanks to Jeff, this information is now available to the public through the Arkansas History Commission. Zilman no doubt died sometime before Witt's surrender to federal forces in 1865. His wife, Fanny Jane (nee Beard), would go on to marry Joseph C Rainer in White County on October 31, 1867. She and Joseph would have two children. Their daughter, Elizabeth, was born 1867 and their son, Thomas S Rainer, was born in 1876. Zilman and Fanny's children were as follows: 1) John Harvey Bradford (1852-1879 AR) who married Margaret "Mattie" Huey. They had one daughter, Myrtle Ann Bradford who married into the Bloodworth family. 2) George T Bradford (1857-1920 AR) who married Margaret Huey's sister, Susan M Huey. Susan was born in 1856 in MS. Their children were 1) William Harvey Bradford, 2) Nora, 3) Ether Jane, 4) Lovenia P Bradford. 3) Matilda Ann Bradford (1853-1883 AR) who married Samuel E Rainer. Their children were Joseph H and Jesse S Rainer. 4) James J Bradford (1860-1920 AR) who married Mary Elizabeth Malone on September 5, 1886, in White County. Their children were Albert James, William Z, Alice, George, Mattie S, John, Jesse, and Delia Bradford. Some of their children moved to Missouri where many of their relatives continue to live today.
