The construction was signed by Henry Miller, his son George and his wife Elizabeth nee Wilhelm, his son Samuel and his wife Elizabeth nee Lower, his daughter Mary and her husband John C Lower, his widowed daughter Catherane Sprinkle, Elias Paulin and his wife Hannah, George Mentzer, Jacob Smith Jr, and David Lower. These families all lived along the western edge of Springfield Twp , and were for the most part former members of Good Hope Church over the line in Beaver Twp. Rev. J. G. Ellinger, the pastor at the newly formed Zion Lutheran Church east of New Middletown, also served this new church as its first pastor. In 1863 he was succeeded by Rev. Wm B Roller, during whose pastorate a new church was erected in the village of New Springfield in 1871. Over the years the Lutheran churchyard has become a community burying ground, but it is still owned and administred by the church. Early Burials: Stones with the earliest death dates in the 1840's for the Shallenberger/Shellenbarger family predate the formation of the church. Abraham Shallenberger, very likely the father of John, died in June 1848; Mary, the w/o John Shellenbarger, in Aug 1849 and John in November 1850. An infant son of John and Mary died in 1842. Abraham and John Shellenbarger were residents of Unity Two, Columbiana Co. (just south of Springfield Two) and their estates were settled there. The reason for their burial here, several years before the church was established, is obscure. Abraham's wife, Susannah, did not died until 1863, nearly a decade after the church was formed. A possible theory is that when she was buried here, the stones of other family members were moved here from a private cemetery. The earliest church connected burial for which a stone exists is that of Henry Millers wife Elizabeth (Seidner) Miller who died in 1853 at the time the church was being informally organized. The next three burials were in 1856 - for three children, among them the sons of Jacob Shafer and Samuel F. Hadley, who were later officials of the church. Cemetery copied, partially recopied, rechecked and added over a period of twelve years from 1972 to 1984.
