Previously the county town of Berkshire, Abingdon is one of several places that claim to be Britain's oldest continuously occupied town with people having lived there from the early to middle Iron Age, or at least 6,000 years. It is not more than 6 miles miles south of Oxford and 5 miles north of Didcot in the flat valley of the Thames on its west (right) bank. Abingdon Abbey was founded in Saxon times, possibly the 7th century, but its early history is confused by numerous legends, invented to raise its status and explain the place name. The name seems to mean 'Hill of a man named Æbba, or a woman named Æbbe',but Abingdon stands in a valley and not on a hill. Abingdon became the county town of Berkshire sometime after receiving its Royal Charter in 1556 and in the 17th century it was vying with Reading for County Town status. It was part of Berkshire until the 1974 boundary changes transferred it to Oxfordshire. The Abingdon Roman Catholic Parish serves the most northern part of the Thames Isis Pastoral Area through the Church of Our Lady and St Edmund of Abingdon The Church honours St Edmund Rich whose Feast Day is celebrated on the 16th November every year in Abingdon, where he was born, about 1170. Even in those far-off days there were universities and he was educated at Oxford and in Paris-his family were prosperous. After he was ordained priest he returned to Oxford to teach theology there. He gained a great reputation for both scholarship and holiness. In 1222 he was appointed the administrator of Salisbury cathedral, from where he was elected Archbishop of Canterbury. The church stands at the junction of Radley Road and Oxford Road, and the churchyard was consecrated for interments in 1858.
