Description : The Pennhurst Memorial Cemetery is located on the grounds of the Pennhurst State School and Hospital. The state-owned facility opened in 1908 to serve the needs of over 500 disabled children in Southeastern Pennsylvania. The facility was expanded over the years to become a 1,400-acre, essentially self-sufficient community. Overcrowded almost from its start, by the 1950s it had over 3500 patients/residents in 17 major residential buildings. In 1987, the institution was closed as the result of lawsuits and deinstitutionalization. The cemetery is located on the grounds of the abandoned facility.
