The ploughing of the field has, from time to time, encroached upon the sacred precincts, so that the corners have been rounded off; and it now lies, like a small half-moon, along the fence. The soapstone gravestones are all broken; some pieces are still projecting above ground, but nearly levelled with the earth, while fragments are lying around, with letter and parts of names upon them. The largest number of letters we could find together, on any fragment, was 'schu.' . . . A most lonely and neglected spot is this ancient burialplace, but, on that very account, it is more sadly and solemnly interesting. The fence corners are filled with thorns, under which we found pieces of tombstones. A solitary Juneberry tree throws a feeble shadow upon the spot. The ground is covered with the many-leaved yarrow, the wild parsnip, the Canadian thistle, St. John's wort, cinquefoil, spots of white clover, solidago of golden rod, with here and there a lonely mullein, a bunch of wild cotton, and low bushes of wild plum." ~~~~~~~~~~~~ REIFF REFORMED CEMETERY - Skippack Reformed Church and Cemetery in Lower Salford Township was built on land of the Jacob Reiff farm. Resident Roland Kerr was told years ago, by an older resident, that it was located near the southwest corner of the intersection of Upper Mainland Road and Old Morris Road (or Morris Rd.), and may be back further towards the woods that are there, instead of right by the intersection. Per Roland, the cemetery existed until about 1850, until the gravestones were yanked out by a farmer who wanted to cultivate over the graves. It is said that the stones were left in low areas or "ditches" by the cemetery. [Another story says that the owner/farmer (named Anders) used some stones in building a bake oven.] The graves numbered 100 to 150 people. Graves include the Strong family and Gabriel Schuler and wife Catherine. More information is included in the "History of Montgomery County- the First 100 Years", by Theodore Bean. THIS INFO AND ALL CEMETERY PHOTOS ARE COURTESY OF JOYCE MILLER PARTNER LOWER SALFORD TOWNSHIP - Skippack Reformed Church: The first attempt to establish the Reformed church in the area is credited to Gerhard Indenhofen. It was one of the earliest Reformed congregations in the new world. In the 1720's, he organized services to be held in member's homes including his house, which was then the only home in what is now Skippack village. Through the 1720's, the Rev. Boehm from Blue Bell would ride out to give the sermon. About 1727, a neighboring farmer in Lower Salford Twp., Jacob Reiff, allowed a stone meetinghouse to be constructed on his land at Old Morris Rd. and Upper Mainland Rd. There may have been conflicts among members as to the ability of their preachers, similar to other congregations of the time. The major factor in this church's decline was a dispute that started as an accusation that Jacob Reiff had misued congregational funds while on a trip to Germany for the purpose of raising support for their church.. The congregation diminished until disolving about the 1740's, according to the history of the Reformed Church in America. The church was torn down and the stones were used to build Reiff's mill along a tributary of the Skippack Creek near the south side of Quarry Rd., just west of the bridge. Author James Heckler noted a 1756 date-stone on the mill. A cemetery was located near the church site, and may have had over 100 people buried there over the period of the church's existence. The stones were taken out by a later land-owner who farmed over the cemetery. The church is said to have been in the area of the southwest corner, which currently appears to be an open field and a small wooded area. The stones were taken out by a farmer, and may have been placed in "gullies" near the cemetery or along the road. The people interred there may number over 100.
