The church of St. George the Martyr Holborn, is located at the south end of Queen Square in the London borough of Camden. Easily recognized by its zinc spire, it was originally built in 1703 as a chapel of ease for the church of St. Andrew Holborn. Purchased by the Commission for Building Fifty New Churches, it became a parish church in 1723, at which time it was dedicated to St. George. It became a Grade II listed building in 1951 It's parish boundaries are: Bounded on the south by Theobald's Road, on the east by Lamb's Conduit Street (both included in the parish), on the north by Guilford Street, and on the west by Southampton Row (which are not so included). Being a London church, it had no adjacent land for a churchyard and so, in 1713, a three-acre parcel was acquired in what was then an open field, and which was used as a shared burial ground with the nearby parish of St. George's Bloomsbury. The burial ground was not adjacent to either church. The first interment in this burial ground took place in January, 1715 and the last in the year 1855 at which time the cemetery was closed. Thirty years later, the now-derelict cemetery was made over as a public green space and since 1855 has since been known as ST. GEORGE'S GARDENS. Most of the burials were in unmarked graves; only a few monuments and markers remain. Burial records, however, will indicate the deceased was interred in the burial grounds of St. George the Martyr, Holborn, Middlesex.
