Campbell, 407 Hulin, Charles City, formerly of Mason City, received word that their son, Lt. Thomas Justin Campbell, of the 8th Army Air Force was wounded in flight over France and died on Feb. 16, in Cambridge, England. Lt. Campbell was born in Charles City, Oct. 30, 1919. He was a graduate of the Holy Family High School, Mason City, with the class of 1937. He entered the United States service Dec. 29, 1941, receiving his commission as pilot on April 29, 1943, at Moody Field, Valdasta, Ga. He arrived in England, Dec. 1, 1943. Besides his parents, Lt. Campbell is survived by three brothers and four sisters: PFC Francis E. Campbell in the South Pacific; Lt. J.H. Campbell, Hawaii; John, Charles City; Mrs. A.W. McGuire, Mary and LaVonne, Mason City, and Virginia, Charles City. He also has a brother-in-law in the service, Capt. A.W. CAMPBELL MONDAY "One of the best liked boys on base," writes fellow officer Solemn requiem high mass will be sung for Lt. T.J. Campbell at the Holy Family Catholic Church Monday morning at 9 o'clock with Father R.P. Murphy officiating. Lieutenant Campbell, son of Mr. and Mrs. D.E. Campbell, formerly of Mason City, died in Cambridge, England on Feb. 16, from wounds received in action over France. A letter from a fellow lieutenant in the 8th Army Air Force who was with Lieutenant Campbell when he died has been received by Campbell's parents. Describing what happened, the lieutenant writes: "We were flying on a raid over France and the flak was terrifically intense. It was bursting in and around the ship. One piece came through the fuselage and wounded Tom in the stomach. The doctors said he couldn't have had better care while he was on the ship. My engineer and radio operator administered first aid and kept his spirits up by talking to him. He was conscious all of the time and suffered very little pain which helped him a lot. He was transferred from our base hospital to the best one in England and everything possible was done for him. They couldn't stop his internal bleeding, however, and he passed away around 2 o'clock in the morning. T.J. was one of the best-liked boys on the base," wrote the lieutenant. "He was always so cheerful and always had a pleasant word for everybody. He was worshipped by everyone on the crew and they all wished me to express their sympathies as well. Tom is going to be buried in a beautiful cemetery at Cambridge. We are all going to attend his funeral. I assure you everything is being done the way you would want it to be." The letter closes by stating that the lieutenant will continue writing to Lieutenant Campbell's parents and that he will visit them when he returns to the States.
