Dayton Review February 22, 1894 COMRADE AT REST On Saturday, February 3, 1894, all that was mortal of comrade Abraham Olson, was, by his comrades laid to rest in Dayton Cemetery. He was a charter member of Capt. Alex Dowd Post and it had been his expressed wish that at his death his comrades should bury him. This wish was at his death, seconded by his family and was carried out by the post. There was a large attendance of the comrades at his funeral and six of their number as pall bearers marched beside the hearse and four others with reversed arms, as a guard of honor followed it. The sad procession was headed by Major Conklin's drum corps playing the dead march. Rev. John Linn preached a very touching discourse from the text, "Be ye also ready," at the M.E. church in Burnside where the funeral services were held. Post Chaplain, J.G. Durrell read the obituary and address found below. A procession of thirty teams followed the remains to Dayton. The concluding services were conducted at the grave according to the ritual of the Grand Army of the Republic by the chaplain. THE CHAPLAIN'S ADDRESS For the first time in its history, Capt. Alex Dowd Post is called upon to say good bye, and pay the last sad rites to a departed comrade. For these men who had become so familiar with death it seems passing strange that for nine years they have been able to brave him, and today for the first time their ranks are broken. Comrade Abraham Olson, whose confined remains life before us, was a charter member of our post. He was a man who had the true spirit of comradeship and was ever ready by word and deed to carry out the spirit of fraternity, charity and loyalty inculcated by our order. He was not a man who sounded a trumpet before him that told of his deeds. He was quiet and unobtrusive: the record of his battles have been left unrecorded. He went forward from duty to duty, honest in purpose and faithful in performance, the measure of his ambition being an approving conscience. Comrades, friends, this is no ordinary funeral. The clay in yonder casket enclosed a hero and in all ages it has been held a distinguished honor to give the hero burial. He has honestly gained the appellation given. As a stripling but little more than 17 years of age he enrolled his name and was mustered into what proved to be one of the most famous batterie of the war - the DeGress battery. Its guns were heard on almost every western field from Shiloh to the close of the war. During the wild scenes of the 22nd of July, when Gen. Hood made the desperate attack on the left of the army that cost us the life of its commander Gen. McPherson and so many of his bravo men at Atlanta, DeGress' battery was in the very tickest of the fight and was captured and re-captured from the enemy. To have been, for more than three years a member of that battery, and, as was the case with comrade Olson, always present for duty, was an honor that should bring a flush of honest pride to the faces of his children. Abraham Olson was born in Bergsjo, Hälsingland, Sweden, Sept. 2, 1844. When he was give years of age, his parents started for America, and it was while at sea that he met the first great sorrow of his life in the death of his father, whose body he witnessed consigned to the waves. The next twelve years of his life he spent on a farm in Illinois and then three years was given to his adopted country. November 2, 1870, he married Miss Mary Anderson and the following year moved to Iowa and settled here in Burnside. The assemblage attests its appreciation of the man. His honorable walk and life is known to all. He has been sickly for a long time but was not a man to complain and he has borne his suffering in silence. He was taken with his fatal illness only two weeks before his death. His courage was good but the poor body had fought its last battle. He answered the eternal roll call on Thursday morning, Feb. 1, at 6 o'clock. To his wife, three sons and two daughters who so deeply mourn him he has left a record of a good life and unselfish deeds, and to his comrades a tender memory.
