Description	:	Update: July 27, 2014 - Adam was a son of George and Catherine Mathias Stever, who were located in Huntingdon county, Pennsylvania. This contributor (rkt) was trying to determine their burial location so that memorials can be made for them; Nancy Thompson (no relation) found them to be buried in that area and so relationship links have now been made to Adam's parents. The DOB location is now updated through research provided by Steve Kemp. There have been several variations found, but will update this memorial per Steve's research at this time. --------- The following information is provided... Read More	Update: July 27, 2014 - Adam was a son of George and Catherine Mathias Stever, who were located in Huntingdon county, Pennsylvania. This contributor (rkt) was trying to determine their burial location so that memorials can be made for them; Nancy Thompson (no relation) found them to be buried in that area and so relationship links have now been made to Adam's parents. The DOB location is now updated through research provided by Steve Kemp. There have been several variations found, but will update this memorial per Steve's research at this time. --------- The following information is provided about Adams' parents: "A description of the township from the History of Huntingdon and Blair Counties, Pennsylvania by J. Simpson Africa published by Louis H. Everts of Philadelphia, PA in 1883. The township information starts on page 237.... The Stever Family George Stever, of German extraction, moved from Bucks County to Trough Creek Valley some time prior to the year 1800, and purchased a part of the tract that had been improved many years before by William Shirley, as wee as other lands, sufficient to make several good farms. Besides conducting extensive farming operations he carried on blacksmithing, and from his shop several young men graduated. His children were Philip, who purchased from the father the farm where his son Lewis lived and died; Adam moved to Jefferson County, Iowa, and died there; Joseph, who settled in Hare's Valley, and died there; John resided upon his part of his father's estate, and died there, serving one term as county commissioner; David died on his farm lying between his brother John's and the borough of Cassville; Sarah married John Myerly; Elizabeth married Solomon Fink; Catharine died unmarried; Mary is now living in Cassville. A part of the Stever land had been owned by Ignatius Notts, and was called in the patent "Nottingham." The title papers show that it had been improved in the year 1776." ------- Birth date update: The original contributor of this memorial, Nancy Thompson (no relation to this contributor), had used May 10, 1799 for the birth date. To conform with the age at death on his headstone, and other sources listed below, I am changing Adam's DOB to January 5, 1799. //rkt January 22, 2011. ------- Marriage Date: 16 Aug 1826, Huntingdon Co, Huntingdon, PA ------- Special note: No obituary or death notice for Adam Stever has been found in a search of available 1858 Fairfield area newspapers that are on microfilm. As a result, much of the information that has been extrapolated for Adam Stever comes from other sources. ------- From the Prill transcriptions (Note: Orville and Mary Prill were longtime Jefferson county Iowa genealogists who spent many hours finding genealogy information in courthouse, obituaries, family bibles, land records, cemetery headstone records and headstone inscriptions that they personally observed, as well as other sources. Elizabeth STEVER, Born Dec. 2, 1796, Died Feb. 14, 1863 Adam STEVER, Born Jan. 5, 1799, Died 1858 Joseph STEVER, Born Feb. 23, 1801, Died Oct. 16, 1880 John STEVER, Born Sept. 27, 1803, Died June 17, 1854 Catherine STEVER (Aunt Katy), Born Aug. 25, 1805, Died Aug. 29, 1874 David STEVER, Born July 4, 1808, Died Oct. 23, 1872 Mary STEVER (Aunt Polly), Born May 29, 1811, Died Mar. 23, 1896. Notes: The first mention we have found of Adam STEVER's name in Jefferson County Records is on 18 March 1840 when he made entry on the NE ¼ of Sec. 27, Walnut Township. (Jefferson County Original Land Entries.) Apparently he did not develop or live on his Walnut Township land. "In 1844 he brought his wife and family from Pennsylvania and bought 500 acres of land about one and a half miles west of Fairfield, built on it a log house in which the family lived for two years. The brick house was built in 1846, of bricks made by hand from the clay of Mitchell Creek. This brick house was long a "landmark" of Fairfield and Jefferson County. Mrs. Adam STEVER was a sister of Col. John PARK and James PARK of Walnut Township. Adam was an expert gunsmith." ("Fairfield Ledger", Oct. 2, 1939) On Apr. 12, 1854, Adam STEVER & wife deeded to their son, Solomon F. STEVER, the NE ¼ of Sec. 27, Walnut Township. On the same day Solomon F. STEVER deeded the same land to August HETTICK. (Jefferson County Deed Book 'L', Page 151.) A tall white marble shaft marks the grave of Adam STEVER in Evergreen Cemetery. Inscription: "ADAM STEVER, Died Aug. 30, 1858, Aged 59 y. 7 m. 25 d." It was probably first erected on Lot #30 of the Old City Cemetery, and after Evergreen Cemetery was opened in 1870, the monument - and the remains of Adam STEVER - were moved over into Evergreen. --------- Adapted from 1936 obituary for daughter Louisa Jane Stever: "The children of Mr. and Mrs. Adam STEVER, listed in order, were: Mrs. Catherine LONG (sic.Catharine on headstone), Miss Margaret, Solomon, George, Mrs. Rachel BLACK, Mrs. Ann Mary GLASGOW, John, Mrs. Almira AXLINE, Miss Elizabeth, Miss Louisa Jane, Adam Jr., and Dr. David STEVER. David was born after the family moved to this vicinity. Miss Louisa Jane STEVER was the last member of this pioneer family."
