Son of Nathan Nesbit Byers and Sarah Ann Hamilton OBITUARY THE CHARITON PATRIOT Chariton, Iowa Thursday, May 7, 1908 ADDISON ROSS BYERS Addison Ross Byers died at his home near Belinda, Iowa, April 29, 1908, aged 77 years, 11 months and 3 days. He was born near Bloomington, Monroe county, Indiana, May 26, 1830. Funeral services were held Thursday morning at eleven o'clock at the church he helped establish, conducted by Elder A. L. McQuarry. Interment was made in the Strong cemetery. On April 12, 1853, he was united in marriage to Charlotte M. Vannoy, and together they shared life's sorrows and joys, until the faithful wife was called home on May 29, 1903. They were the parents of nine children, four having preceded their parents. Those living are Nathan N., Nicholas C., Harvey L., David A., and Mrs. W. E. Carter. Mr. Byers was a strong adherent to the faith known as the Christian church or Disciples of Christ. In early life he united with this church near Bloomington, Indiana. His pastor, James Blankenship, and his parents were worshipers with the old Cain Ridge, Kentucky congregation during the ministry of Barton W. Stone. Mr. Byers enjoyed telling of those olden times, of the struggle of the faithful few in his boyhood home and also of the pioneer days in Iowa. With his family he moved to Iowa in the fall of 1860, at a time when civil strife threatened our nation. In 1866 a church organization was effected, consisting of 15 charter members, Mr. Byers being the last surviving member of this noble band. The Byers home served as a house of prayer until 1873, when they built a house of worship. For many years the name of A. R. Byers was prominent before the people of Southern Iowa as an auctioneer and in the vocation he was very successful. In the war of the rebellion, he was one who lent his services to his country. To those bereaved ones, the community extends sympathy.
