Byers passed away on August 23, 1911, at 4:10 p.m. after a lingering illness with dropsy and heart trouble. Funeral services were conducted by Rev. C. C. Davis, pastor of the Christian church, a brief service being held at the residence on Friday morning at nine o'clock and at Zion church, northeast of Chariton at 12:30. The Chariton male quartet sang several selections at the house, while a choir sang at the church and a trio composed of Messrs. Best, Kneeland and Davis, sang "Going Down the Valley." Interment took place in the Zion cemetery. Nicholas Caleb Byers, son of Addison R. and Mary Byers, now deceased, was born near Bloomington, Ind., on May 12, 1856. In the fall of 1869 he removed with his parents to Lucas county, Iowa, locating in Pleasant township, and his boyhood and manhood days have been spent in this county. He was a type of the early pioneer days of Iowa - rugged, positive and aggressive in disposition. He was united in marriage to Eliza Ann Smith, now deceased, of Pleasant township, in November 1880. From this union there is one daughter, Mrs. Ora Borger, of Chariton. In the early 80's he united with Christian church in Pleasant township. He died in the faith of the gospel of Jesus Christ. He was again united in marriage to Lizzie May Grimes of Jackson township in 1892. They became members of the Christian church in Chariton in 1904. He has been a resident of Chariton the later years of his life, from whence he was called home, surrounded by his wife, relatives and friends. Those who survive are his wife, a daughter, one granddaughter, one sister, Mrs. Anna Carter, of Pleasant township and three brothers, N. N. Byers of English township; H. L. Byers of Lamoni and David Byers of Des Moines. All those sorrowing ones will have the heartfelt sympathy of the community in their grief.
