Byers, son of Addison R. and Charlotte Byers, was born near Belinda, Iowa, March 10, 1861. His early life was spent on the farm assisting in the regular farm work and attending the public school. His education was continued at Ackworth and Davenport, Iowa, and thus he prepared himself for the work of teaching, which he pursued for 16 years in the common schools and as principal at Lucas. He also developed a musical talent and gave instruction to others in vocal music. His life among the common people was such as to win their love and esteem and to show the place he occupied in their estimation, they twice elected him as their representative in the General Assembly, and once gave him the honors of Senator. He was also active in the promotion of commercial enterprises, giving several years to work of developing the coal industry at Lucas. For a few months past his health had been failing and the past few weeks he grew rapidly worse until death came on November 25, 1915 and he passed beyond the bounds of time at the age of 54 years, 8 months and 15 days. Of the immediate family, two brothers, N. N. Byers, of Belinda and David A. Byers of California, are left to mourn his death. Other relatives and many friends bow their heads in sorrow today as they gather to pay the last tribute of earthly respect to the memory of one who grew up among them and has now passed to that place from whence no traveler ere returns. He united with the Christian church on May 30, 1882 and was a firm believer in the redeeming faith of the Saviour of Men. Funeral services were held at Belinda at 10:00 a.m. on Sunday, conducted by Dean Kirk of Drake University, Des Moines, and the remains were interred in the cemetery west of Belinda, where so many of his family rest.
