Adele Marie Fargen was born on July 29, 1915 in Verdigre, NE, to Carl and Mary Diez. She grew up on the family farm near Clearfield, SD, one of ten children. Adele graduated from the Geddes Academy in 1933. She continued her education at business school in Mitchell, and started a career there. Adele married Leo William Fargen in 1939 in Clearfield. They started their life together in Pierre. When WWII broke out she moved with other wives of the 147th Field Artillery, to Salinas, CA, while their husbands were deployed to the Asian theatre. After the war, Adele and Leo returned to Pierre and started a family. She lived in the family home for sixty-one years. Adele moved to Maryhouse in 2008 and passed away April 29, 2014 at the age of 98 years. Leo and Adele were active members of Ss. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, where she was a member of the choir and the Saint Anne's Band. After Leo passed away in 1955, she raised their six children. As her older children went to college, she started working at the Department of Transportation in 1966 and formed many lifelong friendships. Adele worked there until her retirement in 1982. She adored her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Many of the things she enjoyed doing included a life-long love for embroidering, crocheting, and cross-stitch. This is evidenced by the numerous works hanging in homes all across the country with the familiar "amf" stitched in the lower-right hand corner. Adele was an expert Scrabble player known as the queen of the "triple word score". Opponents were wise to re-think a word challenge. She also enjoyed playing cards with her bridge club, and was an avid fan of the Chicago Cubs, seldom missing an afternoon game. She was the creator of baked goods beyond belief! Gramma Del's cinnamon rolls, kolaches and home-made bread filled the kitchen and house with mouth-watering aromas. The Friday Night Shrimp dinner at the VFW with family and friends was a regular treat. Adele is survived by her sister Marguerite Blaine, her children Mary (Quarles) Fargen, Tom and Linda Fargen, Lexie Wangsness, Terese Swenson, David and James Fargen. Adele had ten grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents Carl and Mary Diez, her husband Leo Fargen, infant son "Billie", and son Dennis. Adele was a gentle, sweet-tempered person who was easy to get along with and was liked by all who knew her. She always had kind words for other people and never voiced harsh criticism. She was fun to be with and had a quick Irish wit. She will be dearly missed and leaves behind wonderful memories of love, gentle laughter and good company.
