April 9, 1942 - Sioux Rapids Press - The Sioux Rapids community was shocked late Saturday afternoon when the report was circulated about town that Alan Don Hollesen, six year old son of Mr. and Mrs. Jack Hollesen, had accidentally hung himself while playing in a tree across the street from the Hollesen home. At the time the tragedy occurred, there were a number of small children, including Alan's brother, Jackie, playing in the yard, but none of them apparently were aware of the little boy's plight as he hung from the limb of a small tree. As near as can be learned, the youngster stood on a small tricycle and threw his belt strap over a limb about one inch in diameter and in some manner was caught about the neck by the belt as the tricycle slipped from beneath him. Mr. J. Barrett and M. Hamrick, nearby neighbors, were the first to notice the boy hanging from the tree, and hurried to the spot to release him. They immediately carried him to the Dr. T.H. Campbell office only a short distance away, but it is believed life was extinct before the men arrived to help him. Dr. Campbell, his son, Ralph, and a number of assistants worked frantically with a respirator for a four-hour period in an attempt to bring the little fellow back to life, but aid came too late as he had probably been dead several minutes before reaching the doctor's office. Coroner J.F. Taylor and County Attorney Paul D. Turner conducted an inquest at the Green Funeral Home Monday afternoon, when a number of witnesses were called to testify in the case. The coroner's jury, consisting of G.M. Abemathy, Earl Larsen and O.L. Menefee decided that death was caused from accidental hanging. Supt. Henry A. Boone dismissed the first five grades at school Monday afternoon in order that they might at tend the funeral. Business houses were closed during the services. Funeral services for Alan were held Tuesday afternoon at 1:30 at the Green Funeral Home and at 2 o'clock at the Methodist church. Rev. H.V. Bartz brought the message of comfort to the bereaved relatives and a large concourse of friends assembled for the services. A quartet composed of Mrs. W.C. Wood, Mrs. C.B. Risvold, Walter Pritchard and Austin Mueller sang "Sunrise" and "Sometime We'll Understand," Mrs. Wood also sang as a solo "Jesus Wants Me For a Sunbeam." Walter Simonsen was the pianist. Burial was made in Lone Tree cemetery under direction of the Green Funeral Home. The floral offerings were many and beautiful. Bearers were I.R. Remillard, A.B. Caskey, M.I. Williams and A.J. Meyer. The bereaved family has the sincere sympathy of their many relatives and friends. Alan Don Hollesen was born October 15, 1935, at Sioux Rapids, Iowa, son of Louis C. and Virginia K. Hollesen, and died suddenly at 5:30 p.m. Saturday, April 4, 1942, at the age of 6 years, 5 months and 19 days. He was the victim of a tragic accident while at play. He was the second child of Mr. and Mrs. Jack Hollesen and had spent nearly all of his short life in this community. He was baptized in the Methodist faith at Sioux Rapids on Sept. 11, 1938, by Rev. O.W. Brand, then pastor of the church. In September, 1937, while living in Minnesota, God spared his life when Alan contracted an infectious disease and laid at the point of death in a Minneapolis, Minn., hospital for over two weeks. After his return to Sioux Rapids, Iowa, following this serious illness, he enrolled in the Primary department of the Methodist Sunday school, and in the fall of 1941 he began his studies in the first grade of the Sioux Rapids public school, where he was a pupil until his death. Alan was well known by young and old for his honesty and sincerity, and his little friends with whom he played will always remember him as one of their most popular and active playmates. He was an exceptionally apt pupil in school and his abbreviated life can well be an inspiration to everyone. He leaves to mourn his untimely death his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Jack Hollesen; one brother, Jackie; one infant sister, Linda Lou; his grandmother, Mrs. Lew Hollesen, all of Sioux Rapids; nine aunts, nine uncles; 22 cousins and a host of other relatives and friends. Two of Alan's grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. H.R. Cowan, preceded him in death within the past two years.
