They were the parents of four children: Jack, Alan, Linda, and Katherine. June 10, 1971 - Sioux Rapids Bulletin Press - Funeral services for Louis Jack Hollesen were held Friday afternoon, June 4, 1971 at 2:00 from the United Methodist Church in Sioux Rapids with the Rev. Gordon Freeburg officiating. Walter Simonsen was the organist and Walter Grey sang "In The Garden" and "How Great Thou Art". Honorary pallbearers were: Vance Adams, Franklin Halverson, George Hurless and Eilet Torkelson. Active pallbearers were: Merlin Crow, Dale Hollesen, Dean Hollesen, Harry Hollesen and Ronald Hollesen and John Reno. Burial was in Lone Tree Cemetersy at Sioux Rapids with Military Services at the Gravesite. Sliefert Funeral Home of Sioux Rapids had charge of the arrangements. Louis Jack Hollesen, was born January 4, 1909 in Lee Township east of Sioux Rapids, Iowa, a son of Lew and Anine Jensen Hollesen. He received his education in the Sioux Rapids school, graduating with the class of 1930. On June 16, 1931, Jack was united in marriage with Virginia Katherine Cowan at Alpha, Minnesota. The young couple made their home in the Sioux Rapids area all their married life. To this union was born four children. Jack was employed as a meat cutter, having labored in this field in the Sioux Rapids Community for about 22 years. On December 3, 1943 Jack entered the United States Army, serving until July 29, 1945. Jack was the first pre-Pearl Harbor Father to be called into the Armed Forces from Buena Vista County in World War II. Jack was a life-long member of the United Methodist church of Sioux Rapids and during his active years participated in many areas of interest in his church. He was a member of the Graeber-Rowe American Legion Post #394 of Sioux Rapids and was the County Adjutant and the Commander of The American Legion of Buena Vista County. He has placed the flags on the War Dead at the Cemetery for many years, at decoration time. Always deeply sensitive to his role as a husband and father, Jack was dearly loved by all of his family. He felt that his grandchildren undoubtedly were his greatest pleasure, especially so in his recent years when he was a semi invalid. He was known always as a man who was both a good husband, father, and grandfather! Another great pleasure was his collection of various antiques, especially the large collection of many and varied types of telephone wire insulators of many years usage. He enjoyed speaking of this hobby with all who cared to visit with him about it. On the evening of Tuesday, June 1, 1971 Jack was taken to the Spencer Municipal Hospital by his family and it was here that he passed away about 8:15 a.m. Wednesday morning June 2, 1971 of a massive heart attack, attaining the age of 62 years, 4 months and 28 days. He was preceded in death by his father in 1932, his mother in 1953, a son Alan Don in 1942. He is survived by his wife, Virginia, one son and daughter-in-law, Jack C. and Ruby Hollesen of Sioux City, two daughters and sons-in-law; Linda and Harlan Heidelbauer of Waucoma, Iowa and Kathy and Dick Gilmore of Linn Grove, Iowa, 7 grandchildren: Don, Paul and Carol Hollesen of Sioux City, Traci, Lori and Todd Heidelbauer of Waucoma and Angela Gilmore of Linn Grove; 3 brothers: Verne and Ben of Sioux Rapids and Darreld (Hap) of Spirit Lake; 2 sisters, Mrs. Earl (Stella) Crow of Huckley, MN and Mrs. Jay (Ethel) Lighter of Sacred Heart, Minnesota, and a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends. Surely the community shares in the tragic loss of this devoted husband, father, and grandfather.
