Alan was united in marriage to Janet Sharer on July 23, 1971 with her grandfather, Dr. Paul Hillman, and Dr. Alva Clark officiating. Alan was united in marriage to Janet Sharer on July 23, 1971 with her grandfather, Dr. Paul Hillman, and Dr. Alva Clark officiating. Survivors include wife Janet, daughter and son-in-law Dr. Elizabeth Claassen and Dan Pelletier of Durham, NC, son and daughter-in-law Dr. David Claassen and Mary Jane of Memphis, TN, daughter Kathryn Claassen Davis of the Twin Cities, and exchange daughter from Germany, Carolin Götz and her husband Nils vor der Strasse. He is also survived by grandsons Jonathan and Micah Claassen and “German granddaughter” Marlene. Other survivors are his brothers John Claassen (Carol), Rob Claassen (Rosie), Nathan Claassen (Nancy), and sister Rhoda Frasier (Robert), aunts, uncle, numerous cousins, nieces and nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents. Alan graduated from Beatrice High School in 1965 and then was a non-traditionally aged graduate of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln with a degree in Agricultural Economics in December, 1988. Prior to returning to college, he was a Gage County Deputy Sheriff for 11 years and then after completing his ag degree worked for and retired from Farmers Co-operative as a grain manager. He enjoyed his work with the producers in the Firth, Nebraska area. He was baptized at Beatrice Mennonite Church at age 16. He was an active member of Centenary United Methodist Church serving in many capacities ranging from youth group sponsor to the Finance Team to chair of the Board of Trustees. He was a faithful member of the Chancel Choir. Alan loved to sing and was active for many years in the Homestead Harmonizers. He grew to love the theater and served on the Board of Directors of Community Players, Inc. for six years. He also performed on stage at the theater. He passed this love of music and theater on to his children. Services will be held at Centenary United Methodist Church, 608 Elk, Beatrice, NE on Saturday, April 15, 2017 at 1:30 PM with Pastor Mark Schutt officiating. Private family burial of cremains will be at a later date. Cremation has taken place, but a register book will be available for signatures on Friday from 10:00 AM-7:00 PM at the Griffiths-Hovendick Chapel in Beatrice with the family greeting friends and relatives Friday from 5:00-6:30 PM. The family requests no flowers. Memorials are suggested to Centenary United Methodist Church or Community Players, Inc. of Beatrice, Nebraska with the funeral home in charge. A family prayer service will be held at 1:15 PM Saturday at the church. Sign Alan's online guest book and watch his video tribute when completed at www.ghchapel.com.
