Geise Willow Lake, South Dakota Clark County January 24, 1922 – September 18, 1945 Killed in Action on Luzon Island in the Philippines Albert Carl William Geise was born on January 24, 1922. He was the son of Edward William Geise and Marie Wilhelmina (Seefeldt) Geise. Albert had six brothers and sisters, who, along with Albert, grew up on a homestead in Lake Township in Clark County. Albert attended country school through ninth grade in Lake Township District #49. He graduated in May of 1940 from Willow Lake High School, where he and another boy stayed in town with a store owner and worked in the store before and after school during their high school years. After graduation, Albert began farming 160 acres of leased land. Albert enlisted in the US Army at Watertown, South Dakota, on October 1, 1942. He was first assigned to Ft. Snelling in Minnesota, then he was transferred to aerial engineering school at McDill Field in St. Petersburg, Florida. During his service time in the United States, Albert was assigned to various bases. He came home on leave once in early December of 1943. In March of 1944, Sgt. Geise was sent overseas to New Guinea and was there until August of 1945. He was then transferred to Biak Island off the coast of New Guinea. On September 18, 1945, Sgt. Geise and fellow crew members were sent on a mission to obtain supplies. The following excerpt is from a letter that Sgt. Geise's mother received: Sgt. Albert C. Geise was flying as Aerial Engineer on a B-24 "Liberator" bomber from Biak Island, Netherlands East Indies, to Clark Field, Luzon, Philippine Islands, on the return leg of a trip to procure needed supplies. The plane crashed into the side of Mount Sembrone, Laguna Province, Luzon, P.I., on 18 September 1945. The entire crew was instantly killed. The bodies of your son and the others who died with him were interred with full military honors and religious services in the military cemetery at Manila, Luzon, P.I., Services were performed by Chaplain W.J. Robbins of Thirteenth Bomber Command. The family of Albert Geise was informed by telegram on October 12, 1945, that Sgt. Geise had been missing in action since September 18, 1945. On November 8, 1945, the family was sent a telegram that stated that Geise had in fact been killed in a plane crash on Luzon Island. Sgt. Albert Carl Geise was buried at Ft. McKinley, U.S. Military Cemetery, Manila, Philippine Islands, Plot F, Row 13, Grave 79. Sgt. Geise was awarded the Victory Medal, Good Conduct Medal, Foreign Service Medal, and Pacific Theater Medal.
