Whitmore dies at 91 BATAVIA --- Claude Whitmore, former member of the Jefferson County Board of Supervisors, died at 7:15 p.m. Monday at the Parkview Care Center in Fairfield. He had been in failing health the past year. Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at the Gospel Lighthouse Church in Batavia with the Rev. James Fleming officiating. Interment will be in Memorial Lawn Cemetery in Fairfield. Family visitation will be will be at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Campbell Funeral Chapel in Batavia. A memorial to his church has been established. Claude Whitmore, 91, was born Jan. 17, 1890, near Bladensburg in Wapello County, the son of Albert and Sarah Harrison Whitmore. He spent most of his life in the Brookville community and was a farmer until his retirement in 1963 at which time he moved to Batavia. Whitmore was married to Esther Baird July 20, 1918. She survives. He was a member of the Gospel Lighthouse Church and the Masonic Lodge 198 at Batavia. In addition to his widow, he is also survived by a brother Harvey Whitmore, Fairfield. ------ Note: A recent burial in an adjacent plot evidently damaged the nameplate for Claude Whitmore and it was missing as of the date the headstone photo was taken on April 12, 2010.
