Description	:	Private Albert Franklin Crooker served in the 23rd Infantry Regiment, 2nd Division, during World War I. He was killed in France on July 18, 1918, at the age of thirty. After... Read More	Private Albert Franklin Crooker served in the 23rd Infantry Regiment, 2nd Division, during World War I. He was killed in France on July 18, 1918, at the age of thirty. We know something of his fate from records of the regiment, maps of France, and from a local hometown newspaper, The Plumas National. His regiment arrived at St. Nazaire, France, in 1918. The town is on the western coast of the country. Because it sits on the right bank of the deep Loire River estuary, the town became an important unloading port of the allied troops during the war. After departing St. Nazaire, Albert's regiment engaged in major battles across northern France at Aisne, Lorraine, Ile de France, Aisne-Marne, St. Mihiel and Meuse-Argonne. However, he died early in the invasion. A November, 1917, article in The Plumas National listed Long and Crooker and 25 other local inductees who were being drafted together. Several months later, the paper published a letter written by a fellow soldier to his mother detailing the early days of the 23rd regiment's movements. The letter, written by William (Bertie) Long, who hailed from Portola, a small town in Plumas County, describes how the inductees arrived together in Europe on May 11, 1918. On June 1, Bertie Long, Albert Crooker and 15 others received orders to go directly to the front the next morning; they were to join the 32nd Division as infantry replacements. However, in the middle of the night a sergeant awakened Long and Crooker with new orders. They were to join up with rear-guard railroad units in Saint Aignan. Saint Aignan is on the Brittany Peninsula and about 100 miles north of St. Nazaire. Long believed that their railroad experience in Plumas County drew them the assignment. The two soldiers were in Saint Aignan by early June. Then, according to Long, after about two weeks, they received new orders; he was to leave Saint Aignan for Gievres but Crooker had to go to the front. That was the last Long heard of him. Crooker was killed on July 18, roughly one month after Long left him for Saint Aignan. Bertie Long survived the war, returned to his home in Plumas County in June 1919, and eventually married and raised a family. Albert Crooker, almost forgotten with the passage of time, rests peacefully in Red Bluff's Oak Hill Cemetery.
