L'Ecuyer Died Monday Albert L'Ecuyer's condition became so serious last Friday that it was decided to remove him to a hospital. Dr. Beach, his mother and wife left on the afternoon Rock Island for Topeka. He was taken to Christs Hospital for treatment. His relatives and friends felt encouraged over his condition until Sunday night when a phone message said he was growing worse. Father Harmon left on No. 60 and remained with him until death ended his sufferings at 3:30 Monday afternoon, nine days after the awful accident befell him which ended so tragically. Deceased was born in Clyde February 26, 1889. He attended the public school here after which he engaged in the grocery business with his father and brother. Being a good singer, he took part in many public entertainments given by home people. He was married to Edith Harmon April 26, 1911, who is left a widow to mourn her loss at twenty-one. A more devoted pair than this we have seldom ever seen. His parents Mr. and Mrs. J. N. L'Ecuyer, three brothers, Arcade, Ulysses and Armand, two sisters, Marie and Amanda also survive him. In addition to this there are many relatives and a host of friends who are mourning today. The funeral was held in the Catholic church Wednesday at 10 o'clock in charge of Father Ennis. The Reverend preached a touching and eloquent sermon as memorial to the life and character of the departed. After the sermon the Knights of Columbus took charge and rendered a beautiful and fitting service to the memory of their departed brother. He was also a member of the Moose lodge and Woodmen. The number and quality of the flowers sent was tribute to the esteem he held in the hearts of his friends who performed this last office from loving hearts. The writer had known Albert J. L'Ecuyer many years having been closely associated with him in the domestic circle for two years. No apology or explanation was ever needed for his conduct. He was incapable of a mean or unmanly action for he was created with a good conscience and honorable convictions. His honesty, candor and industry made a friend of those who knew him. that a stout, rugged young man twenty-four years old should be taken from life's activities so suddenly makes us pause and meditate on life's fragilities. The Voice Republican Thursday July 24, 1913 Page 1 A Bad Fire L'Ecuyer's Grocery Nearly Destroyed, Bert Terribly Burned. One of the worst accidents that has happened here for years occurred about 5 o'clock Saturday evening. Bert L'Ecuyer went to the storage tank to put three gallons of coal oil into a five-gallon metal can. Without warning the oil exploded and the burning liquid was thrown all over the unfortunate fellow. Ulysses yelled to him "beat it to the tank: and Bert went out of the store at a terrific pace, ran across the street and half falling, half jumping, went into the city watering tank and was at once submerged. He was pulled out of there, carried into Sexton's Drug store where Drs. Girard, Follett and Johnson were promptly on hand to wrap the suffering man in oil and cotton after which he was carried to Father Harmon's. His shirt, necktie and collar were burned off in his race for life across the street. An examination disclosed severe burns on his side, arms, back and hands. A nurse, Miss Stackpool, was called from Concordia on the phone and went to her duties of easing the pain by ten that night. Mr. Turner arranged to have the light plant run that night and it was kept in operation all night Saturday, Sunday and Sunday night so that Bert might be cooled by the fans. It was a mighty nice thing to do and he and Mr. Groff have the gratitude of our people. No other person in the store was hurt although all of the employees and several customers were in the room. The fire department maintained its promptness and soon had a stream of water pouring into the front and back doors. Jerry Sullivan being an old fireman, grabbed the nozzle and sent a whirling stream that quenched the blaze in a few minutes. the stock was badly damaged and the building scorched and water soaked. The big plate glass windows crumbled before the heat. No explanation is offered for the explosion unless it be that the small can was overheated from the sun. If any boy has a better theory, they are welcome to advance it. All of the accounts, books and cash was saved. The stock was insured for $3500, building for a like sum and fixtures for $500. To take care of their trade the Henry L'Ecuyer stock was purchased by the Clyde Grocery Co. Monday. The stock was invoiced Monday night and the firm opened for business Tuesday morning in the new location. Taken as a whole it was a lucky ending for a dangerous situation. Had the wind been blowing from the south as strong as it did the first of the week, we might all be looking at a pile of ashes now. As it was the smoke came out into Reid's building on the east.
