Hoffman, pioneer Auburn resident, died in his home here last Sunday, October 19th, at the age of 79 years. He was a Native Son, born at Michigan Bluff, April 1st, 1861. He moved to Auburn when seven years of age, and Auburn has been his home ever since. He had been retired for several years, and had been in ill health for the past two years. "Allie" Hoffman, as he was familiarly called, was known by everyone as a very loyal public citizen, a kindly neighbor, and a true friend. The editor of the Herald had known him for over 52 years, and he was a continued friend. We never heard of a doing an unkind act and his good deeds were many. A. N. Hoffman was a bachelor. He is survived by one niece, Mrs. John Spencer of Berkeley, and by two nephews, Henry Stevens of Berkeley and George H Hoffman of Sacramento. Funeral services were held last Tuesday, October 21st, from the Lukens-Dorsey Funeral Parlor, under the auspices of Auburn Parlor, N. S. G. W. Pall bearers were Frank L. Tripp, C. H. Morrow, Walter Jacobs, James Sheridan, L. F. Klumpp. and J. H. Sullivan. Internment was in the Auburn Cemetery. The following article on A. N. Hoffman appeared in the "Know Your Neighbor" column of the Herald in its issue of January 25th, 1941: In the year 1959 Michael Hoffman of Eire, Pennsylvania was making the slow journey across the continent to California by wagon train. His wife, Catherine, unable to stand the arduous journey, was aboard a steamer which docked at Panama, from where the passengers crossed the Isthmus and boarded another steamer which took them to San Francisco. At San Francisco Michael Hoffman met his wife and took her to Coloma, California where he prepared a home. Several years late the family moved to Georgetown and from there to Michigan Bluff, where on September 27, 1862 Albert N. Hoffman was born. When "Allie" was seven years of age, the family moved to Auburn, on April 1st, 1869, where his father continued in is business of trucking freight by wagon to various towns and villages. As a boy, Allie remembers that the freight was collected at Sacramento, until the time the Southern Pacific built the spur to Rocklin and the freight was taken from the trains and delivered by wagon to Forest Hill, Michigan Bluff, Todds Valley, Yankee Jims and up the big divide to Last Chance and Deadwood. Allie was the youngest in a family of eight children,m six boys and two girls. All the Hoffman children had their ponies, and Allie remembers as the youngest boy that is usually fell to his lot to deliver messages and telegrams, for when the question arose concerning a messenger, people were told, "The Hoffman boys will do it" and Allie was the one generally on hand. At this time he was attending school in Auburn, which at that time was a two story building on the site of the present Auburn Union Grammar School Upon leaving school Allie worked at several jobs until the year 1888, when he was 26 years of age and the City of Auburn was incorporated, he was the city's first Marshal and Tax collector, holding both offices. After that he was elected to the office for two terms of two each, refusing again to be a candidate. In 1900 Albert bought the Union Livery Stables and conducted this business successfully until the advent of the automobile, after which time he worked in various mines, and then began prospecting for himself and made several nice strikes. He remained a bachelor, making his home with his mother in the Hoffman homestead on High Street. A lover of horseflesh, Allie delighted in holding the reins over a team of four or six spirited horses, and always drove the finest equipage in town. His favorite horse was a bay mare named "Babe" and an oil painting of her hangs in a prominent place in the study of his home. He was one of the mot popular young men of the town and "led" all the grand marches at the various balls, and also "called" the the quadrilles and lancers. After the death of his mother, Allie turned the homestead into an apartment building and decided to build himself a smaller home on the adjoining lot. He possessed a fine set of carpenter tools and a small knowledge of construction, and decided to build the house with his own hands. That he did a fine job is evident in the well planned and finely constructed home he now occupies. Allie is one of the two living charter members of the Auburn Fire Department, and is also a charter member of the Native Sons of the Golden West. J. E. Walsh is the other surviving member of the firemen and Native Sons. Al Hoffman has been the continual president of the Pro Rata Club, probably the oldest outdoor men's club in Auburn.
