Description	:	Born in Alseae Lorraine, Germany, duchy of Luxemburg, came to America in his early manhood, settling in Honntown, Iowa where he met Catherine Smith in 1850. Two years later he crossed the plains and reached Sailor's Flat in El Dorado County August 1852 where he followed mining until moving to Georgetown in 1854 and was joined by his wife. Two years later he crossed the plains and reached Sailor's Flat in El Dorado County August 1852 where he followed mining until moving to Georgetown in 1854 and was joined by his wife. Michael went by wagon train to California. His wife, Catherine, unable to stand the arduous journey was on board a steamer which docked at Panama, from where she crossed the Isthmus Canal and boarded another steamer to San Francisco. Michael met his wife in SF and moved to Coloma. Several years later, the family moved to Georgetown and from there to Michigan Bluff (1855), moving to Auburn in 1868. Michael had a business of conducting freight by wagon to various towns and villages, collected at Sacramento to Virginia City until the Southern Pacific built the spur to Rocklin and the wagons delivered then to Forest Hill, Michigan Bluff, Todds Valley, Yankee Jims and the the big divide to Last Chance and Deadwood. He mined near Redding and remained there until ill health brought him back to Auburn in 1899. Considered a quiet man. Michael died after 6 mos of illness including rheumatism, affection of the heart and dropsy. His death certificate lists his father as Martin Hoffman, his birth as 02 April 1818 in Germany, married, retired, death from "Disease of the Heart" was 04 Sept 1907 in Auburn at 10 am. He was 90 years, 5 months and 2 days old, lived in California 55 years and in Auburn for 41 years. Placer Herald, 07 Sept 1907 page 5 col 2 and page 3 col 6: Hoffman - In Auburn, September 4th, 1907 Michael Hoffman, a native of the Duchy of Luxemburg, aged 89 years, 5 months, 2 days ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Crossed the Big Divide On last Wednesday forenoon Michael Hoffman, a pioneer of this county and old resident of Auburn, passed peacefully to his long rest, after an illness for some six months duration. He had been troubled with rheumatism and an affection of the heart, but was able to be about until six months ago, when the disease took an acute form of dropsy, which kept him in doors. Deceased was born in the Duchy of Luxemburg in 1818, and came to America in his early manhood, and settled in Honntown, Iowa, where he married Miss Catherine Smith in 1850. Two years later he crossed the plains and reached Sailor's Flat in El Dorado county in August 1852, where he followed mining until 1854, when he moved to Georgetown, and was there joined by Mrs. Hoffman who had come to California that year by way of the Isthmus. In 1855 the family moved to Michigan Bluff, thence to Auburn in 1868. During the Comstock excitementement [excitement] Mr. Hoffman hauled freight for several years with an ox team from Sacramento to Virginia City. After settling in Auburn, he teamed between Auburn and Michigan Bluff until 1885, when he went into mining at Redding. He remained there until 1899, when failing health called him back to Auburn. Deceased came from a hardy family and had all the physical characteristics that make the pioneer. Strong, sturdy, ambitious and industrious, he feared no hardship, no danger and he spoke with no uncertain voice on every question of the hour. He was married but once and the wife of his young manhood survives him. Two daughters, Mrs. M. E. Stevens of Auburn, Mrs Thomas Shamp of Sacramento, and five sons, Frank M., of Philadelphia; Joseph E., of Nome, Alaska; Andrew M., William R., and Albert N., of Auburn are the living issues of the marriage. The funeral services were held at the home at 3:30, yesterday afternoon; Rev. W. A. Cash officiating, The remains were placed at rest in the Odd Fellows Cemetery.
