Her great grandson, John Shurtleff Stevens used to laugh to tell about Catherine, sitting in her rocker on the porch, rocking quickly back and forth, as she happily consumed an entire jar of hot pickles, tears streaming down her face from the heat. Sacramento Union, 18 April 1917: Pioneer Woman of Auburn Passes Away Mrs. Catherine Hoffman, Who Came to Coast in 1852, Died at Age of Eighty-four Years. Special to the Union, AUBURN (Placer Co.), April 17. — Mrs. Catherine Hoffman, one of the pioneer residents of Auburn and Placer county, died in this city yesterday at the advanced age of 84 years. The funeral will he held tomorrow afternoon with services in the Catholic church at 3 o’clock, after which the internment w ill take place in the Off Fellows Cemetery. Mrs. Hoffman was a native of Luxemburg, Germany, being born there in 1833, but came to America with her parents at the age of seven years, their home being in Erie, Pa., and later in Iowa. In Iowa she was married to Michael Hoffman, and he came to California in 1852, crossing the plains, she followed in 1854. Their first home was in Hangtown, now Placerville, El Dorado County, but after a few years they moved to Michigan Bluff, this county, then a big mining town. In 1869 they moved to Auburn, and this has been the home of Mrs. Hoffman up to the time of her death. Surviving deceased are five sons, F. M. Hoffman of Pennsylvania, J. S. Hoffman of Willows, W. R., A. M. and A. N. Hoffman of Auburn. There are three grandchildren of deceased, Henry Stevens and Mrs. Mildred Spencer of Auburn and George H. Hoffman of Sacramento, and two great grandchildren Clarence Stevens and George Hoffman, Jr. Catherine's death certificate gives her death as April 16, 1917 11 am, from Bronchitis/pneumonia with a senile heart. She was 82 years, 4 months and 6 days old, widowed, and the reporting party was her son, A. N. Hoffman.
