Description	:	At birth her name was Alcina. It is an uncommon name that means "strong willed". In Greek mythology, Alcina was a sorceress who ruled over a magic island. Various records spell her maiden both as Mathews or Matthews. Alice's childhood was difficult. Her father Oliver enlisted and died as a soldier in the Civil War when she was only 5. Her mother Martha was left in a tough financial situation. So she sent Alice and her siblings James and Adaline to the Iowa Soldiers Orphans' home sometime after Oct 1864 when the home opened and before 1867. It's not clear where Alice was in 1870 as she is not in the Orphan's home or with her mother in the Census. A family story is that she was involved with a White family before her marriage but there are no details known. It was more likely to be a work arrangement than an adoption because her name when married was still Mathews. The orphanage was in Davenport, Iowa which is directly across the Mississippi river from Moline Illinois which is where she was married. She married William Lewis Post in Moline on 19 Sep 1877 at age 20. She is "Miss" on the marriage license and so this is likely her first marriage. They stayed in Moline until at least 1880. They had their first child, Edith Post while living there. By 1881 they had moved to Frankfort, Marshall County, Kansas where her second child, Charles Albert Post was born. In 1884, they were living in Atchison Kansas. Her mother and second husband had also moved there. She had May Alcine Post and Louise Frances Post while there. On 1 July 1890, she left Atchison for Anaconda Montana. She lived the next 17 months in Anaconda with her husband and kids. She died there 18 Dec 1891 of pneumonia after being sick for a week. She was only 34 and left behind 4 small children. Her name is also on the memorial for her husband and daughter May. Their grave locations have been lost by the cemetery so that memorial was created for them. It seemed appropriate to include her in the memorial as the wife and mother.
