Description	:	Annie's childhood was difficult. Her father Oliver enlisted and died as a soldier in the Civil War when she was only 1. Her mother Martha was left in a tough financial situation. So she sent Adaline and her siblings James and Alcina (Alice) to the Iowa Soldiers Orphans' home sometime after Oct 1864 when the home opened and before 1867. Her mother remarried James Grandy in 1873. Annie left the orphanage after 1870 to rejoin her mother. She is in the Orphan's Home as Anna in the 1870 Census. The family moved to Kansas sometime between 1873 and 1878. In the 1880 US Census, they lived in Vermillion, Marshall, Kansas. While in Kansas, Annie met Clark Lewis Cutler. They married in Kansas in about 1878 (from Clark's obituary). Clark's father, Aretus Cutler lived in Vermillion, Marshall, Kansas at this time so that's likely why Clark was in the area at age 26. At that time, the mining operations in Butte Montana were expanding. Annie and Clark moved to Butte where Clark initially worked at the Quartz Mill. They moved to the nearby town of Anaconda where the smelting was done before 1900. Annie's sister Alcina (Alice) was in Kansas with her husband at the same time as Annie. Alice and her husband moved to Anaconda in 1890. Then perhaps due to Alice's tragic early death in 1891, Martha also moved to Anaconda and stayed from before 1900 until between 1905 to 1910. Annie and Clark had 11 children: Ira Lee Cutler (1879-1967) Mabel Minnie Cutler (1881- Before 1916) Her life after divorcing George J Miles is unknown. Lillian Francis "Millie" Cutler (1883-1968) Clark Lewis Cutler (1885-1944) Bessie Olive Cutler (1887-1949) Leonard Monroe Cutler (1888-1964) George Richard Cutler (1891-1945) Charlotte E "Lottie" Cutler (1895-1977) Roy Albert Cutler (1897-1970) Oliver James Cutler (20 May 1900- 26 Apr 1924) He was called Willie in the 1900 Census. It's not clear why. His burial details are not known. Harold David Cutler (1904-1978) It's interesting that one of the places Annie and Clark lived is now a ghost town named Cable. They lived there, and had 4 of their children, from about 1885 to between 1891 and 1895. It is west of Anaconda, Montana near Silver Lake. It was the settlement adjacent to the Gold Coin Mine and associated Gold Coin Mill. The buildings are still there. By the look of them, living there was primitive and cramped. Winters there can be long, cold, and with a lot of snow. However, the mine was closed from 1891 to 1898. So if they stayed after 1891, it would have just been renting. After Clark died on 13 Jan 1916, Annie remarried on 8 April 1916 to William Facer. He died just several years later in 1922. Subsequently, Annie remained in Anaconda until her death. Notes: 1. The death certificate for Oliver (26 April 1924, Seattle, WA) with the informant being her son Roy, gives her maiden name as May Mathews. So she may have had May as a nickname. He died in City Hospital, Seattle of Post Operative Shock and Sepsis. He also had chronic left tibia osteomyelitis. His wife's name is given as Julia George Cutler. His last address was Ellensburg, WA. 2. The spelling of her family name varies between Matthews and Mathews. This is common with many names in genealogy. 3. Addie May Matthews (findagrave memorial 25722492) who married William B Knouse has sometimes been included in this family but should not be. Her father is John G Matthews. She was born 6 Aug 1859 but is not in this Matthews family's 1860 Census. Also, it is very unlikely that this family would have a daughter Adaline and a daughter Addie because those names are too similar. At the time of this writing, 7 DNA matches to 5 of Adaline's children with the author validate that the correct Adaline/Ada married Cutler. So it is a case of two children of similar names and age being in the same area.
