Alene Dorothy (Babcock) Fischer, daughter of Clifton and Lorna (Iauch) Babcock, was born on October 4, 1920, on the family farm on Bazile Creek north of Bazile Mills, Nebraska. She was baptized and confirmed in the Zion Lutheran Church in Creighton, Nebraska. She attended the Bazile Mills School through her sophomore year. Alene Dorothy (Babcock) Fischer, daughter of Clifton and Lorna (Iauch) Babcock, was born on October 4, 1920, on the family farm on Bazile Creek north of Bazile Mills, Nebraska. She was baptized and confirmed in the Zion Lutheran Church in Creighton, Nebraska. She attended the Bazile Mills School through her sophomore year. She then attended Creighton High School, graduating in the spring of 1937. Alene continued her education at Wayne State College and received her teaching certificate. She began her school teaching career at the young age of sixteen. Her first school was District #66 located between Center and Bloomfield. She then went on to teach in District #31 east of Creighton. During her teaching career she was selected as "Best Teacher in the County" by Knox County Superintendent of Schools, Dora Rock. In 1942 she began working as secretary in Mrs. Rock's office in the Knox County Courthouse in Center, Nebraska. Alene loved teaching and educating children. It was her passion. Her passion is evident today by the great number of former students who stayed in contact with her. On June 4, 1950, she was united in marriage to Henry Fischer at Christ Lutheran Church in Bazile Mills. They proceeded to develop a ranch of their own between Niobrara and Center. They were engaged in farming and raising Hereford cattle on their ranch. To this union two children were born – daughter, LaVon, and son, Lyle. While raising her children, Alene was a 4-H leader and taught Sunday School for many years. She was a long-time member of the Golden Valley Extension Club of Center. She worked part-time as a substitute teacher for Center Public School. She served as school board member and secretary for Niobrara Public School for two terms. She was the first woman to serve as a board member. After raising her children she worked part-time at the Niobrara Tribune in the old town site. From 1975 through 1992, she worked part-time at the Knox County Superintendent of Schools Office. While working in the office she was the coordinator for the annual Knox County Spelling Bee. And, she will also be remembered by many as the director of the Knox County Schools' Art Building at the annual County Fair. Henry and Alene purchased a new home and retired to Niobrara in 1985. In 2000 they celebrated their Golden Wedding Anniversary. Henry passed away August 15, 2001. Alene enjoyed being involved in community activities and participated in the Niobrara Quasquicentennial Pageant in 1981. She served on the Niobrara Housing Board and was an active member of the Niobrara Historical Society for many years. In 2002, she was honored as Grand Marshal for the "Bridging of the Shores" Celebration. She was an active member of the LCW at the Niobrara Lutheran Church. Alene continued to be involved in community service in Niobrara until she entered the Creighton Care Centre in the fall of 2008. Music was a large part of Alene's life. She loved to play the piano, organ, and accordion. She played for many weddings and loved to entertain her family with music. In her younger years she was a member of an accordion band that played back-up for performers such as Guy Lombardo and Lawrence Welk. In her retirement years she enjoyed playing the "Happy Birthday" Song for the Senior Citizens' Center. Alene was a creative artist who could create works of art "from anything." Her love of art was reflected in her creative inspirations that she used to teach and inspire her pupils, children, and grandchildren. She enjoyed raising flowers, gardening, cooking, baking, and being with and helping her family. She will be dearly missed. Alene is survived by her daughter, LaVon, of Phoenix AZ, son Lyle (Joann) of Niobrara, grandsons Matthew and Michael, both of Yankton SD, and brother George (Dottie) Babcock of Winnetoon, as well as cousins, nieces, nephews, and a host of friends.
