He was born in County Donegal, Ireland, December 25, 1804, and came here with his parents in 1818. They bought from a Steubenville man or agent the land on which they lived and died, and which they cleared from the unbroken forest. Their remains are interred in the old Scott burying ground. Alexander Long was married to Nancy Scott April 17, 1828, and they lived together until two years ago when death broke the bond by calling away the grand old wife and mother. Her death was a hard blow to the surviving husband, because he was a man of domestic tastes and habits, and thereafter death had no terrors for him. Our hearts instinctively follow the paths of those we love. They had twelve children--six boys and six girls--eight of whom survive, and every one of them, with their nearest friends, had been at his bedside frequently during his last sickness, until the hour of his death. The final dissolution took place Thursday morning at 2 o'clock. Mr. Long's extreme age indicates that he possessed a robust body and strong constitution. He was a very careful man and temperate in all things. Feeling an attack on his lungs in 1849, he repaired to the state of Florida and wintered in that mild climate. He had warded off the disease and never felt a return of it. Mr. Long was a man of strong convictions which he cherished faithfully and conscientiously. He was ever ready to give reasons for the faith within him. He had seen the old, who were contemporaneous with himself, all passed away. The middle-aged have grown to manhood and babes to maturity; yet he felt his life was brief and like unto a passing shadow. His body will be laid away in its final resting place in Scott burying grounds to-day. Friends will assemble at the house at 10 a.m. Rev. H. M. Rader, pastor of the M. E. Church will be present.
