He was married in Clinton County, Iowa, September 4, 1859 to Elizabeth Conrad, with whom he lived fifty-seven years of married life. He moved to Hamilton County, in 1865 - fifty-one years ago and has lived nearly all these years on the farm on which he died. Read More	Alfred Bedford was born in Canada near Georgetown, June 12, 1839 and died on his farm southeast of Stratford, December 22, 1916, at the age of 77 years, 6 months, 10 days. He was married in Clinton County, Iowa, September 4, 1859 to Elizabeth Conrad, with whom he lived fifty-seven years of married life. He moved to Hamilton County, in 1865 - fifty-one years ago and has lived nearly all these years on the farm on which he died. Five children were born to this couple, five of whom are yet living: Daniel C. of Montana, Mrs. Emma Godard of Colorado, Fred C. of Stratford, Mrs. Mary Ristrim of Des Moines and Mrs. Elizabeth Andrews, living at home. He leaves one sister, Mrs. Annie Bentley of Marshalltown, fifteen grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren to mourn his passing. Deceased was one of the pioneer settlers of this state and of this county. He came here when the county was wild prairie land and hewed a home for himself and wife in an unsettled part of Iowa. He has seen much of the history of this grand state in the making and suffered those privations which all of the early settlers of this state had to contend with in the early day. Frugal and honest, he by the hardest work, made a success of his farm and was respected by every one of his hosts of friends. He has been ailing for several years and it was known some time ago that he must soon answer the call of his Master. And yet he lived to a ripe old age to see the home he had made when land could be had almost for the asking, and which at that time lay alone on the open prairie, closely associated with towns and neighbors. The funeral services were held from the family home and from the M.E. church in Stratford Sunday and were attended by many who came to pay honor to one of this community's grand old settlers.
