Read More	Dayton Review Thursday, June 19, 1913 IN MEMORIAM Monday afternoon at about 3:30 p.m. the report came like a thunderbolt out of the clear sky to Dayton that Mr. Alger E. Lewis, who moved from here to Idaho last March, was seriously wounded by the accidental discharge of a shot gun at his home in Caldwell, Idaho. The presence of death at any time is sad, but an accident is doubly sad, and harder to bear up under by his bereaved wife, brother, sisters, and other relatives and friends. Alger is gone, but not forgotten. His friends were many, but only to a few, and in his own home, where he was devoted and true, did his true character shine out as it really was. He was of a courageous and hopeful disposition, and during those terrible hours following the accident, he showed the same noble spirit that had characterized his life, and he met his death as bravely as he had met life and all its struggles. Yes, Alger is gone, but the example of sturdy manhood he left behind, his character, which was above reproach, and the stand he always took for principle and right doing, will be a monument to his memory, never to be forgotten. But better than all, was his beautiful Christian faith, in which he died, which was also illustrative of the Apostle Paul, when he said, "I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith. Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness." The funeral services at Caldwell, Idaho, where beautiful and impressive, in the M. E. church. The services were conducted by an old friend, Rev. Howarth of Payette, Idaho, assisted by Rev's Buckley, Rice and Hawks. Rev. Howarth spoke many kind words, his remarks being touchingly given. Many were the expressions of flowers, and otherwise, to the bereaved, who had lived but two months in Caldwell. The bereaved wife and friends appreciate the comforting words of the pastor, whom the deceased loved so well. The pastor knew how to help and comfort his sorrowing friends. Well did he emphasize the fact that "Our Father" is near us in all our trials, and will pilot us safely over all life's billows, and see that we enter the "Golden Harbor." The funeral services here were held at the H. A. Lewis home, and at Grace M. E. church, by the pastor Sunday afternoon at two o'clock. Impressive were the services by the Allen Young people in the cemetery as they sang, "Yes, we'll gather at the river." MRS. H.A. LEWIS Alger Edwin Lewis was born in Appleton, Wisconsin in 1858. When eleven years of age, he came to Dayton, Iowa, where he lived with his parents until 1882, when he went to the Dakotas, and remained there twenty-three years, then returning to Dayton, his old home. January 3, 1894, he was married to Miss Augusta Weaver, who now is left to mourn the loss of her kind and faithful husband. In the latter part of March last, Brother and Sister Lewis moved to Caldwell, Idaho, where they bought a home, at which place, he suffered from an accident and died, being 54 years, 11 months, 4 days old. A brother and two sisters mourn the loss of a dear brother. Wm. Weaver in a great sense feels keenly the loss of Bro Alger's death. January 29, 1913, Messrs. Alger Lewis, Herbert Lewis, Wm. Weaver, and Cyrus Snyder, were received into our church with Mrs. A. E. Lewis, Mrs. Herbert Lewis, and Alice Lewis, the latter by letters (besides others). But Bro Alger was a Christian man for sixteen years before, though he united with no church. Bro. Alger was a kind, peaceful and hard working man. His neighbors know he was a Christian gentleman, and his pastor knew he had the peace of God in his soul. Bro Alger was always loyal to the cause, and a very close friend to his pastor in all his pastor's trials. The comfort and help he rendered his pastor was evidence of his loyalty to Jesus. He died in the faith, exclaiming as the song was sung, "I too am a child of a King." We extend our heartfelt sympathy to these mourning friends, and pray the Great Comforter to be preciously near them in their hour of sadness. By request of Mrs. A. E. Lewis we wish to say that Mrs. Lewis does really appreciate all the kindness and comfort shown her by all. She appreciates the fact that so many friends met her at the depot. She is grateful for the efforts of the neighbors, she is thankful to the singers, and to the kind telephone girls. The community feels indeed sorry for the sadness that has come into Mrs. Lewis's life, and extend their heartfelt sympathy to Mrs. Lewis, the brother, the sisters, and weeping friends. C.E.
