As an adult Alice returned to Linn County where she married, raised several children & lived out the remainder of her life. Alice Marian Parr was born in 1859 into a Linn county pioneering family. Her parents were Leonard and Ruth Marian (Schoonover) Parr. She had one brother, William, who was the oldest of four children. After William came Emma, then Ella May, and Alice was the youngest. When Alice was a few days old, her mother became ill with brain fever. Her father was forced to separate his family. A family named Shafer adopted William, a family named Beltnap took Emma, Alice's mother went to Mt. Pleasant for care. She lingered a few years and died. Alice did not know where she was buried. The Parr's owned a good farm and had considerable property, but with his home ties being broken and his family scattered, Leonard became discouraged and restless. He went with a cousin to California to the gold mines. Later, while he was on a large ship on his way back home, Alice's father was taken sick and died. They buried him at sea. Alice learned this when she was 72 years old. Alice's Schoonover grandparents took care of her for a short time, then a family by the name of Hale, then a family named Wilmot. Frederick and Elizabeth (Houver) Kinley adopted Alice when she was seven months old, despite the fact that she was "the puniest palest sickliest baby they ever saw". The Kinley's had two living children, Oliver and Martissa. The Kinleys moved onto a farm near Newton, Jasper County, Iowa. Frederick enlisted in the Civil War. One day, Elizabeth saw Frederick limping down the road toward them, dressed in Army Blue. He had been wounded in the leg. He had the rifle ball with him. When he returned to the war, he was killed at the Battle of Chattanooga near Lookout Mountain. The boys rolled him in a blanket and buried him on the battle field. Mrs. Kinley eventually sold the farm. They moved around, including Kansas for one year. After a terrible storm, Alice and her mother moved back to Iowa. The moved to Missouri next, then Des Moines. At the age of 18, Alice married Israel M. Irish in Marion, Linn County. He was the son of Joel Signor and Mary Ann (Brockman) Irish. Together Alice and her husband had six children, and spent the remainder of their lives in Linn county, first in Marion and later Springfield where they are buried.
