JASPER LATHROP DIED AT HER HOME HERE LAST NIGHT Mrs. Jasper LATHROP passed away last night about one o'clock at her home on West Van Buren street. She had been seriously ill the past two weeks with pneumonia, following an attack of influenza. Mrs. LATHROP was born in Louisa county, May 9th, 1862, being at the time of her death 56 years, 8 months and 7 days old. Thirty-five years ago on Sept. 13th, she was united in marriage to Jasper LATHROP of this city. To this union were born ten children, nine of whom with the father survive her. They are Joseph LATHROP of Fairfield, Mrs. A.S. LEWIS of Kansas City, Mo., Mrs. Clyde SMITH; Mrs. Thomas LEE, Mrs. Frank SMITH; Emma LATHROP, Fred LATHROP, Mrs. George MANLEY all of this city, and Ed. LATHROP of Davenport. The funeral services will be held at 10:30 o'clock tomorrow morning from the home on West Van Buren street in charge of Rev. L.E. Kuhns and burial will be in Evergreen cemetery (sic. actually buried in Old Fairfield City cemetery, Lot 107 E 1/2). ~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~ The burial location for Alice's husband Jasper Perin Lathrop is not known for certain. Although his obituary stated his burial was to be in "Evergreen cemetery", there are no cemetery records to support his burial there (cemetery records for Evergreen are generally well kept). Because the obituary for Alice mistakenly attributed her burial to Evergreen when she was actually buried in Old Fairfield City cemetery, it is possible that he was buried beside her. This contributor has used witching rods on this Lot 107 and they do cross right over where Alice is buried, and they cross again just to the south of her. So it is possible that either Jasper or someone (perhaps a child) was buried beside her and no burial records exist to prove or disprove his/their burial. Because of this open-ended question of where Jasper Lathrop is buried, this contributor is not making (nor hopes that anyone else will) a memorial for Jasper as either "Burial unknown"/"Old Fairfield City cemetery"/"Evergreen cemetery" unless and until cemetery information or other sources found to 'prove' his burial. *Update - this contributor consulted with Jack Raymond of Raymond Funeral home in Fairfield. His father and uncle purchased the Hoskins Funeral Home business in 1959. Jack graciously brought out the 1944 Hoskins records and examined them. Burial was stated to be at "Evergreen", but without Evergreen cemetery records to correspond with this, the possible mis-attribution of Evergreen for Old Fairfield City cemetery remains possible.//rkt Feb. 6, 2012. Based on obituary information and census information, it appears that Jasper Perin LATHROP was a twin brother of Newton G Lathrop (d. August 24, 1932); which if true would give a DOB for both as March 18, 1861. Newton's headstone appears to have been mis-engraved with a DOB year of 1841, however. The obituary below is added to Alice's memorial in lieu of not knowing where Jasper is truly and proven to be buried. -------- Obituary & burial notice for Jasper Lathrop: Fairfield Ia. Daily Ledger Monday March 6, 1944 Pg. 8 Col. 5 J. LATHROP, 82 PASSES AWAY Jasper LATHROP, about 82, passed away at 10:30 last night at Clinton, Iowa, following a stroke suffered last week. He was the father of Ed LATHROP, 602 South 6th St.; Mrs. George MANLEY (Gertrude), 608 W. Van Buren, Mrs. Thomas LEE (Myrtle), 610 West Van Buren, and Fred LATHROP of Davenport. He is also survived by one step son Art LEWIS; and by his second wife, Mrs. Margaret LATHROP of Clinton; 27 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Alice, who passed away in January 1919, and by one son and three daughters. Mr. LATHROP lived in Fairfield most of his life, and was a plasterer by trade until his retirement a number of years ago. He moved several years ago to Clinton. He had been in fairly good health until recently. The body will arrive in Fairfield Tuesday morning and be taken to the Hoskins Funeral Home. Funeral arrangements are not yet completed. Earl Hobson. Burial will be in Evergreen cemetery (sic. burial in Evergreen cemetery is NOT supported by cemetery records; it is possible that he was actually buried in Old Fairfield City cemetery in Lot 107 next to his first wife Alice Rachel WHITAKER LATHROP but his grave, in either case, is unmarked). ------- Note: Jasper Perin Lathrop reportedly remarried on Sept. 4, 1923 to a "Margaret Ann Church" (March 21, 1858-Dec. 8, 1944), according to a tree on Ancestry.com. This need verification and documentation. Where was Margaret buried?? ------- Of the children of Jasper and Alice Lathrop, the burial whereabouts of Arthur Lewis Lathrop is not known to this contributor. Another child of theirs reportedly died Dec. 8, 1907, but the DOB and burial location are not known. Possibly buried in Old Fairfield City cemetery, but not certain.
