Ruth was born on August 5, 1916 in Jefferson County, Iowa, the daughter of Ross and Pearl (Glasgow) Koontz . She graduated from Fairfield High School in 1933. Read More	Alice “Ruth” (Koontz) Salts, age 98, passed peacefully from this life on Saturday, November 1, 2014 at Living Community of St. Joseph. Ruth was born on August 5, 1916 in Jefferson County, Iowa, the daughter of Ross and Pearl (Glasgow) Koontz . She graduated from Fairfield High School in 1933. Ruth married Charles Roy Salts on June 23, 1940 in Fairfield, Iowa. He preceded her in death on January 11, 1983. Ruth and Roy farmed for many years near Batavia, Iowa. She began her teaching career in 1935 and taught in several rural Jefferson County schools. She earned her masters’ degree from Northeast Missouri (Truman State) University, Kirksville, Mo. in 1970. She retired in 1980 from the Cardinal School District, Eldon, Iowa, after a combined 37 years of teaching. Ruth lived in the Batavia and Fairfield communities all her life until she moved to St. Joseph in July 2011 to be near her daughter and family. Surviving are her daughter, Rita and son-in-law, Steve Whipple of Cosby, Mo.; two grandsons, Lance (Charlette) Whipple of Cosby; and Matthew (Miriam) Whipple of St. Joseph; four great-grandchildren, Lance Tyler, Zackery, Natalie and Samuel Whipple; one brother, John (Ruth) Koontz of Fairfield; several nieces and nephews. Funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, November 8, at the Batavia United Methodist Church in Batavia, with Pastor Michael Finn officiating. Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. Friday at the Raymond Funeral Home in Fairfield. Cremation will follow the funeral service and inurnment of cremains will be at the Evergreen Cemetery at a later date.
