He was born in Butte on Sept. 9, 1944, to William and Betty (Donaldson) James. The family moved around for a few years, including brief stays in Anaconda and Myrtle Creek, Ore., before returning to settle in Butte again where Allen grew up and attended local school. On Dec. 18, 1966, Allen married Merlynn Annette Carlson, with whom he had seven children and shared 31 years of marriage before her death in 1998. Allen worked at his father-in-law Vern Carlson's 4 Mile Welding, as well as Naranche Conda and the Anaconda Co., at the smelter in Anaconda, from which he retired in 1978. He later became a fixture at the M&M Cigar Store in Butte where he dealt panguingue and was known for his many years dedicated to coaching baseball and T-ball, both within the parameters of the Northwest Little League, and in his own spare time to his children, nieces, nephews, friends and any interested child. In his retirement, Allen's time and efforts were dedicated largely to his family as a supportive father and an exceptionally devoted grandfather and great-grandfather. He was a baseball fanatic (his team being the Atlanta Braves), overall sports enthusiast, film buff, and well-read historian at heart. His kindness, humor, and generosity will be sorely missed by those who knew him. He was preceded in death by his wife, Merlynn; daughter, Lynn Miller; son, Vern James; and brother, Gerald Shea. He is survived by his brothers and sister-in-law, Arthur and Katherine James, Glen James and Robert James; children and children-in-law, Allen and Jackie James, Jan McDougall, Weston and Paula James, Jessie and Jamie James, Margaret James, and Vernon Miller; grandchildren, Justin James, Benjamin James, Crystal Bowser, Taujha James, Kayla James, Breeinna McDougall, Jannetta McDougall, Zachary Pidgeon, Damien Frowmfelter, and Lorisa Podgroski; great-grandchildren, Kadyn Bowser, Kodie James, Benjamin James II, Rhydr Bowser, and Evangeline Gee; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and siblings-in-law, throughout the country. Friends are asked to join the family after 12 p.m. (noon) on Thursday in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. with interment to follow in Mountain View Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Our Lady of the Rockies.
