Holmes, 78, retired deputy state game warden, of 611 North Thirty-first street, collapsed and died of a heart attack approximately 11 a.m. Monday in the Novelty shop located at 2816 First avenue north. Mr. Holmes was born at Portsmouth, Ohio, Jan. 30, 1874, son of Mr. and Mrs. LaFayette Holmes, and moved with his parents to Kansas when he was five years old. He lived there 16 years and came to Montana and worked on ranches in the Lavina district for two years. He then worked for a cattle company at Musselshell and worked with James T. Webb, former Yellowstone county sheriff, on the roundups of 1896, 1897 and 1898. Later he worked on the Paul McCormick 7 Bar 7 ranch. In 1900 he entered the employ of Erickson's and Scott's Billings laundry for five years and later operated the Best Steam laundry on North Twenty-seventh street for four and a half years. He sold his interests in the laundry company and went to Nome, Alaska, and returned to Billings in the fall of 1908 and operated a taxi company here from 1909 to 1915. From 1916 to Dec. 1919, he sold insurance and real estate, at which time he was named deputy state game warden. He retired from this position in 1948. In 1942 he filed a petition as a candidate for Democratic nomination for Yellowstone county sheriff. He was a member of Billings lodge No. 113, AF&AM. In Billings, Sept. 29, 1901, he married Miss Grace May Crowe. She died here March 8, 1947. Survivors include three sons, George P. Holmes, Billings, Joseph A. Holmes, Seattle, and Walter F. Holmes, Billings; two daughters, Doris B. Holmes and Mrs. Burgess Cantrell, both of Billings; a sister, Mrs. Alice Brown of Polson; a brother, George R. Holmes of Stafford, Kansas; nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Smith's chapel with Rev. A. C. Caton, pastor of the First Methodist church, officiating. Members of the Masonic lodge will be in charge and burial will be in Mountview cemetery. Hobert Brunsvold sang "The Old Rugged Cross" and "God Be With You." Mrs. Rex Ireland was accompanist. Committal services in Mountview cemetery were in charge of Billings lodge No. 113, A.F. & A.M. of which Mr. Holmes was a member. Pallbearers were Howard H. Baker, Jesse Davisson, Charles H. Getchell, Harry Hook, Harry W. Hill and Robert J. Thornburn. Honorary pallbearers included officials and wardens of state and federal game departments. They were Dale Shook of Missoula, Frank Starina of Hardin, Rawley Shields of Roundup, A. A. O'Claire of Kalispell, Hernon Sailor of Absarokee and W. H. Berryman, Charles Card, Clarence Houcks, Jack Kohler, Kenneth F. Roahen, Bob Sanderson, Sam Salisbury and R. A. Wells, all of Billings. Mr. Holmes, who had served as a deputy state game warden in the Billings district for 28 years before retiring in 1918, died of a heart attack Monday while in a downtown novelty shop. He is survived by three sons, two daughters, a brother, a sister, nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
