Read More	"Hookie" Dotzler, 71 June 21, 1919 - August 31, 1990 DEFIANCE - Aloysius J. "Hookie" Dotzler, the son of Joseph and Margaret (Blum) Dotzler was born June 21, 1919 at Defiance. He died Aug. 31, 1990 at Harlan, at age 71 years, two months and 10 days. He received his First Communion and was confirmed at St. Peter's Catholic Church in Defiance, graduating from St. Paul's Catholic High School with the class of 1937. Shortly after graduating from high school, he entered the. Civilian Conservation Corp., serving for two years in Moorhead. Oct. 2, 1941, he Entered the U.S. Army, serving his country during WWII. Oct. 24, 1941, he married Cecelia Rose Gau in Sunnyvale, CA. They were the parents of six children. After his honorable discharge Nov. 20, 1945, he returned to the Defiance area. After Cecelia died in Nov. of 1954, he continued to reside in Defiance. Aug. 14, 1957, he married Bernice Kloewer at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Denison. Two daughters were born to this union. He served as Postmaster at the Defiance Post Office for 32 years. He was a member of St. Peter's Catholic Church in Defiance until four years ago when they moved to Harlan, where he was presently a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church. In addition to being a member of the American Legion, Post # 707 in Defiance, he also served as its finance office for many years. He coached boys' basketball for St. Paul's Catholic School for several years. In addition to his parents and his first wife, Cecelia; he was preceded in death by an infant son; a step-daughter, Barbara Ohlinger; three sisters, Margaret Koppold, Lena Schleier, and ah infant Katie; and two brothers, Adolph and an infant Pete. Surviving him in addition to his wife, Bernice of Harlan, are four sons, Dennis Dotzler of Omaha, Ne.; Frederick Dotzler of Saratoga, CA.; William Dotzler of San Mateo, CA., and Bruce Dotzler of Liberty. MO.; 3 daughters, Sandra (Jerry) Heller of Defiance; Mary (Mike) Rohe of Manning; Betty (Joe) Keane of Defiance; 13 grandchildren; two sisters, Barbara (Mrs Frank) Koppold and Irene (Mrs Jake) Erlbacher, both of Harlan; two brothers, Joseph of Defiance and Felix of Harlan; nieces and nephews and other relatives. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Sept. 3, 1990 at St. Peter's Catholic Church in Defiance with Rev. Edward Kelly of St. Michael's Catholic Church in Harlan, officiating. Burial was in Sts. Peter & Paul cemetery with ; Don Dotzler, Dick Dotzler, Leonard Bissen, LaVern Koppold, Bernard Stracke, and Wayne Zitzlsperger serving as casketbearers. Pauley Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. His father was born in Grafenriche, Gemany on August 30, 1869 and his mother was born at Westphalia, Iowa on January 18, 1874. He has two deceased brothers: Pete and Adolph, and his other brothers are Joseph and Felix. His sisters are: Margaret Koppold (deceased), Barbara Koppold, Lena Schleier and Irene Erlbacher. His father owned and operated a harness, shoe and repair shop in Defiance. Hooky graduated from Defiance Public High School. Hooky married Cecelia Rose Gau in Sunnyvale, California on October 5, 1942. To this union were born five children: Dennis married Ellen Coenen. They have three children, Paul, Sherri and Missy, and live in Omaha. Fred married Casandra Whitt of Washington, D.C., and have one daughter, Whittney, and live in Boston. Sandra married Jerry Heller, and have three children, Sharon, Mike, and Jenny, and live in Defiance. Bill lives in San Jose, California and Bruce lives in Omaha. Cecelia Rose died November 2, 1954. In August of 1957 Hooky and Bernice Zitzlsperger Kloewer were married. Bernice was born October 16, 1922 at Dedham, Iowa, the daughter of Joe and Catherine Rosauer. Joe was born at Willey, Iowa on March 12, 1896, and Catherine was born November 7, 1898 at Danbury, Iowa. Bernice has six brothers: Gene, Winn, Bob, Wayne, Clarence and Ronnie. In October 1946, Bernice married Alphonse (Ike) Kloewer of Defiance. He was born April 28, 1918, and died December 22, 1947. He was a World War II veteran. They had one daughter, Barbara Kloewer Ohlinger, born in August 1947. In July of 1967, Barbara married Ray Ohlinger of Panama; she died in March 1976. Hooky and Bernice have two daughters: Mary and Betty, both graduates of Harlan Community High School. Hooky was boys. basketball coach in Defiance for many years. He was also Postmaster of Defiance for 32 years. He spent SO months in the U.S. Army during World War II; two of the years he spent in the Moorhead, Iowa CC Camp. He is now retired and Bernice is present postmistress of Defiance.
