Arrangements were made by Chaney-Reager Funeral Home. Alvin was born May 22, 1913, to Otto and Anna (Nelson) Hoffman in Creighton, Neb. Alvin graduated from high school in West Point, Neb., in 1931. He received his teacher's certificate and taught country school four years in West Point. On July 25, 1937, he married Rutheda Green in Bridgeport, Neb. They moved to Sterling and bought a Coast to Coast store. Later they moved to Sidney, Neb., and bought the North Side Grocery Store and Sidney HiWay Inn. Alvin became an engineer with the Union Pacific Railroad during World War II. They moved back to Sterling in 1947, from Sidney. He bought Broadway Grocery Store, which he owned until 1972. He later built the Broadway Wash and Dry Cleaners in 1962, which he owned and operated until his retirement in 1991. He was also a licensed realtor. Alvin was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Elks Lodge No. 1336, Masonic Lodge No. 54 A.P & A.M. He was president of the Sad dle and Dance Club, and was an elder and deacon of the First Presbyterian Church. He enjoyed traveling. Alvin and Ruth were Northeastern Junior College supporters. The Hoffman Honors House was dedicated to them on Jan. 12, 2002. They enjoyed supporting young adults in getting their start on life. Alvin is survived by one son, Bruce Hoffman and wife Jenny, Limon; one daughter, Marilynn Heth and husband Morrison, Loveland; seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren, Shuree Ramirez and husband Luis and son, Brandon, Fort Worth, Texas, Shawnae Hoffman-Rotellini, Broomfield, Wendy Hoffman, Greeley, Rhonda Heth, Avon, Connie Heth, Los Angeles, Chris Heth and wife Kornelia and sons, Patrick and Steffen, Berlin, Ger many, and Rick Heth and wife Jen and daughter, Emma Lynn and son, charlie, Denver. He was preceded in death by his wife Ruth in March 2001; one brother, Elmer Hoffman; and one sister, La erne Lemepelius. Memorial contributions may be made to the First Pres byterian Church, NJC Foundation or to the donor's choice.
